TRM AIRWAYS NEW ZEALAND, 2005 House keeping….exits, toilets, OSH etc Get participants attention Play ECTRMIntro Video (Euro Control TRM Video) Greetings, introductions and expectations (what do you expect to get out of the course?) Icebreaker….Also ask for favourite piece of music TRM fills a missing gap It is the only time we get a chance to talk and discuss our own and others work practices away from the workplace We get to reflect on our own behaviours and whether they are enhancing or degrading the teamwork A little bit similar to HF and Stress Management………who has been? But with a big change in emphasis as below The big difference is that those courses are more related to the theory and looking at situations from the outside TRM looks from the inside where we think about and discuss the reality our own situations and workplaces Next slide will auto start......be patient! What is Effective TRM Training?

What is Effective TRM Training? not

Compulsory or Non Compulsory?

To reduce and minimise the impact of teamwork related errors TRM Objectives To reduce and minimise the impact of teamwork related errors To develop more positive attitudes and behaviour towards teamwork skills and human performance Possibly already seen on video……But ask the question “What are the key words for you?”……and put on flipchart TRM or Team Resource Management is a similar concept to that of Crew Resource Management or CRM found on the flight-deck, but, with some important differences. Firstly it is acknowledged that pilots and controllers do not do the same job and therefore any attempt to adapt some of the concepts from CRM would be inappropriate. Therefore this TRM course is an attempt to create an instructional course written about the everyday performance of controllers for controllers in their working environment. The objectives of this course have been developed by controllers and they state that "TRM strives to develop positive attitudes and behaviours towards teamwork skills and human performance in air traffic control." The objectives of TRM are also to reduce or minimise the impact of teamwork related errors within the ATM system. To enhance safety TRM AIRWAYS NEW ZEALAND, 2005

Is it the facilitation technique? Or is it the material? Make it easy for group to have a discussion -----= Auctioneers? We use videos, case studies (incidents), exercises, sub groups and general discussion Sometimes we give a little information during module, not to teach but more to stimulate thought The knowledge and experience you bring is where the gold is and is very important and where we learn the most We are the timekeepers, important if you want “morning tea and lunch” Like referee, we start and stop the game----and whistle at the end of day Mostly we have time for discussions to conclude but we may sometimes need to move on Ground Rules 100% attendance, cell phs off, everyone has opportunity to speak, no interrupting, what goes on tour stays on tour, procedure changes through RFC, Parking Lot Folder with notes available at the end of course, now your job is to listen and participate. Any questions? TRM AIRWAYS NEW ZEALAND, 2005

Decision Making Styles in ATC 'Conservative' basic and safe more constant attention 'Surfer' fun, highly efficient sometimes risky attention highs and lows There are many styles of decision making in ATC. Many styles develop from experience and the gaining of confidence within the system. There are two extremes in these styles - the ‘conservative’ controller and the ‘surfer’. Everyone will adopt a preferred style and some styles are adopted by teams, which may also vary amongst units and centres. Often these styles which are adopted by teams become well known by others and in some cases rivalry may develop between different styles in different centres. This can be done by getting everyone on their feet and standing where they think they are on a continuum at the front of the room. Some questions could be: Go and stand where you think your decision making style is at work. If you had a question for someone at the other end of the line what would it be? Are you standing in that position because it is where you are or where you want to be? Move now to where you want to be? Now move to where you want others to see you? Now move to where you were when you first started with Airways? For the three above questions ask “What considerations made you move? “ So we all have people with different decision making styles in our teams What is the impact of having 3 surfers working together? What is the impact of having 3 conservatives working together? What about surfers working alongside conservatives? If it does cause some stress in the team what can you do about it? You may like to think where would you stand in your private life Where do you think our overall culture lies?
