Cybersecurity is Hot Job Market Intelligence: Cybersecurity Jobs In 2017, U.S. employers posted 285,681 cybersecurity job opening Currently 31,731 cybersecurity job openings in California Job postings for cybersecurity openings have grown three times as fast as openings for IT jobs overall. The demand for certificated cybersecurity talent is outstripping supply. Some 84% of cybersecurity postings specify at least a bachelor’s degree, and 83% require at least three years of experience One third (35%) of cybersecurity jobs call for an industry certification, compared to 23% of IT jobs overall.

September 5, 2017 GUIDED PATHWAYS ANNOUNCEMENT “Chancellor’s Office is announcing the first phase of the California Community Colleges Guided Pathways endeavor. This effort will be formally supported by the Guided Pathways Award Program, in which all participating colleges will receive fiscal allocations over the five-year period specified in legislation to accomplish this important work.”

IT Technician Pathway – Cyber Security A tool for students, counselors, and administrators Help students find the training they need to earn valuable IT industry certifications and quickly get IT- related jobs. After taking just a few courses, students are prepared to gain entry-level certifications and move into entry-level IT jobs, such as “Computer Retail Sales” Students can build on these skills by taking additional courses, gain higher level industry certifications, and move into better paying, higher-level IT jobs Opens the door for students who have not been successful in tradition 2-year and 4-year programs

Next Steps Educate students about cybersecurity and encourage students to pursue careers in cybersecurity Invite representatives from you local community colleges to come in and talk to students about their programs Work with your local community colleges to develop IT- related articulation agreements and dual-enrollment programs Encourage students to participate in dual-enrollment programs in IT to get college credit while still in HS Discuss the impact that 2-year and 4-year college degrees have on your students earning potential
