Product requirements for export to EU When exporting to the EU, you can benefit from a big market of 28 countries with around 500 million consumers. Before reaching Europe, your goods must meet the EU requirements to protect human and animal health, the environment and consumers rights. Food and feed safety EU rules on food safety are designed to protect human life and health while the rules on animal feed aim at protecting human and animal life and health. Imports of foodstuffs must comply with general conditions: General principles and requirements of food law Traceability General rules for hygiene for foodstuffs Rules on microbiological criteria for foodstuffs

Animal health EU health rules on animals and products of animal origin are designed to protect and improve the health of animals (especially food-producing ones). Imports of animals and animal products must meet the applicable health standards and international obligations, including the following general rules: the exporting country must be on a list of countries authorised to export the category of products concerned to the EU products of animal origin may be imported into the EU only if they come from approved processing establishments in the exporting country all imports of animals and animal products must be accompanied by a health certificate signed by an official veterinarian of the competent authority in the exporting country every consignment is subject to health checks at the border inspection post (BIP) in the EU country of arrival.

Plant health To export plants and plants products (including fruit and vegetables and wood products) to the EU, one have to make sure that the products comply with the EU legislation on plant health. The EU has laid down phytosanitary requirements to prevent the EU introduction and spread of organisms harmful to plants and plant products. The requirements mainly imply that: Certain commodities are not allowed to be imported into the EU because there are a number of listed organisms (pests); unless certain well established conditions are complied with the country of origin. Specified plants or plant products must be accompanied by a plant health certificate.

Public health The EU's public health rules are designed to protect the EU's population from major health threats. Public health measures include: monitoring and control of communicable diseases (e.g. severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and pandemic influenza) controlling health problems related to unhealthy lifestyles (e.g. tobacco, drugs) monitoring of trade in drug precursors (to prevent the illicit use of certain chemicals to manufacture drugs like ecstasy and amphetamines)

Packaging requirements Packaging marketed in the EU must meet both environmental and health requirements. general rules on packaging and packaging waste packaging sizing special rules for materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuff imports of packaging made of wood and other plant products may be subject to plant-health measures

Labelling requirements Products marketed in the EU must comply with EU labelling requirements, intended to: protect consumers' health, safety and interests provide product information - content, composition, safe use and special precautions, etc.

EU-wide technical specifications • Union harmonisation legislation applies to the Member States of the EU and to certain European territories to the extent necessary to give effect to the arrangements set out in the Accession Treaty of the relevant Member States. • The Agreement on the European Economic Area is established between the European Union and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The Agreement extends the internal market to these three EFTA States – commonly known as EEA EFTA States. • The Customs Union Agreement between the EU and Turkey aims to ensure the free movement of products between the EU and Turkey, by eliminating import controls at the EU-Turkey border on such products.
