Going to Durham Middle School -saying Goodbye to Elementary School-

In the Know What have you heard about middle school? What have you seen on T.V. about middle school? What do you know about Durham Middle School?

Preparing for Middle School We took a DMS Tour. We had a meeting with the counselors. We registered for classes. We are having this guidance lesson. This summer you will practice using a combination lock. On August 22nd, you will attend the Dragon Camp. You will show up on time and with your supplies on the first day of 6th grade.

Preparing DMS Ms. Hood 6th Grade Counselor

Preparing DMS Cafeteria While the food may be better, DMS cafeteria comes with more responsibility. Here you have more choice in what you eat and where you sit; the trick is to make decisions that will keep it that way.

Preparing for DMS Combination locks are difficult the first few times. At Dragon Camp you will get time to practice on your actual locker. You also need to buy a lock for your gym locker; buy it early so you can practice over the summer. Top and bottom lockers- be aware of others around you.

Each teacher will tell you where to put your books. Preparing for DMS Desks are different! Each teacher will tell you where to put your books.

Library Preparing for DMS The Library is larger than the one at Rockbrook, with more books and magazines; however, it is not a specials class.

Preparing for DMS Each teacher and each area may have different rules. You are expected to follow all of them.

Preparing for DMS You have 5 minutes to get to your next class. Tardy=detention, and each class that you’re late for is a separate tardy.

Preparing for DMS Detention slips must be signed by parents. If you miss detention, you will attend Saturday school. DMS has an in school suspension room for suspended students. Cell phones and I-Pods will be taken if seen, and they cost $15.00 to get back. The passing period may be changed to 3 minutes. The school is equipped with cameras.

Preparing for DMS This Summer Buy a combination lock for your gym locker; you can practice using it during the summer. Check the DMS website for school supply lists and updates on Dragon Camp (http://www.lisd.net/schools/durham/index.htm). Use the DMS website to look at sixth grade teachers’ pages and become familiar with their expectations. Relax, going to middle school is a fun and exciting part of life. You are going to have a great time. Attend Dragon Camp to get your locker assignment and practice (tentatively set for August 14th). Start your first day well-rested, prepared, and ready to be in middle school.

Have a great 6th grade year! Preparing for DMS Have a great 6th grade year!
