This is not a PowerPoint. Why would someone say this? Why would someone want to confuse you? To MAKE YOU THINK IN A DIFFERENT MANNER

“Elephants are contagious.” -Paul Eluard I’m not catching an elephant cold! People thought Eluard was nuts.  Inspired by Andre Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto to create works without actually THINKING about what they were writing/creating.

Birth of Surrealism World War I a better way? Dada movement> ANGER about WWI and wealthy population’s treatment of lower classes Surrealism> despair and frustration>> is there a better way to think/behave? Tap into subconscious state to find those answers. World War I a better way?

Andre Breton The Surrealist Manifesto Surreality Subconscious/ Andre Breton 1924> “Manifeste du Surréalisme” “Under the pretense of civilization and progress, we have managed to banish from the mind everything that may rightly or wrongly be termed superstition, or fancy; forbidden is any kind of search for truth which is not in conformance with accepted practices.” Breton calls surrealism “…to express…the actual functioning of thought.” Subconscious/ Dreams Conscious/ Reality

“Marvellous is always beautiful, everything marvellous is beautiful.” Andre Breton 1924> “Manifeste du Surréalisme” “Under the pretense of civilization and progress, we have managed to banish from the mind everything that may rightly or wrongly be termed superstition, or fancy; forbidden is any kind of search for truth which is not in conformance with accepted practices.” Breton calls surrealism “…to express…the actual functioning of thought.”

Incongruous Juxtaposition A characteristic of surrealism is the incongruous (unsuitable/ incompatible) juxtaposition (set next to each other for comparison) of two objects. Again, this causes the audience to rethink the reality the artist/author sets before them. Salvador Dali Lobster with Telephone

More modern– 2000– was in the Guggenheim; surrealism exists today Jeff Koons Mountains
