Project started in Khayelitsha – 2011 – drew on experiences of Wits’ “Targeting Talent” project which focused on getting deep rural school learners into Wits Khayelitsha was chosen due to its under-representation of this community at UCT (UCT Institutional planning stats) – for years some schools not having any student graduating from UCT Record of poor matric results (WCED stats, 2007 - 2009) – learners not attaining university admission points 100-UP is a continuous project and is currently one of the key objectives of SII

Three year Grade 10-12 programme 300 learners: five per grade from ALL 20 secondary schools in Khayelitsha 5th intake in 2015 Build academic & life skills in preparation for tertiary studies Residential holiday camps; Saturday academic enrichment school programme; participation in UCT activities Project beneficiaries? 20 secondary schools x 5 academically gifted learners from each per grade 10 -12 An important underlying principle – equality of participation across the schools, irrespective of school’s status as an academic institution Programme activities?? Res camps to experience life and study at UCT; prep for final exams; UCT student mentors; careers development; NBT writing and online application – challenging for Khayelitsha learners UCT activities include workshops run by UCT students organizations, inform and mentor

Mitchell’s Plain ‘Gill Net’ programme targets ALL Grade 12s Starting in 2015 Mitchell’s Plain ‘GILL Net’ all 16 secondary schools ‘Gill Net’ programme targets ALL Grade 12s ‘GILL Net’ Gill net – all grade 12s with potential for tertiary studies who were not part of grade 10 – 12 Programme selection - based on June exam results Condensed revision programme & assistance with application to UCT; applying for finaid; NBT writing 56 learners included from the 16 high schools in Mitchells Plain in 2015 3rd term revision classes, assisted NBTs, application process All 20 Khayelitsha secondary schools

University enrolments Year 100-UP & Gill Net B-degrees University enrolments UCT Other universities Total % university enrolment 2014 183 79 89 169 91,8% 2015 143 80 46 126 88,1% UCT enrolments from Khayelitsha schools have nearly tripled (from 29 to 80) due directly to the 100-UP programme Project success Those who opted to attend other institutions, went to do their first choice of study, after it was not offered to them at UCT for various reasons The 2014 and 2015 intakes are drawn from 19 out of the 20 Khayelitsha schools

End of First year 2014 68 (86%) passed and progressed into 2nd year 100-UP+ mentoring & support programme, a key addition to the university’s First Year Experience Success of 1st years – ascribed to the continuous support and exposure they receive from UCT careers services in CHED N.B. to have these structures in place when students arrive to UCT – overcoming 1st year battles
