Curriculum Night 4th Grade Antioch Elementary School 1

We will use county resources that support the math standards. IXL will be used to reinforce taught skills and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses. Students use objects, drawings, conceptual language, and real-world situations to help build math ideas that make sense. Students must master multiplication facts (1-12) Homework will be assigned as an extension of concepts learned in class or as review to keep skills sharp. 2

Math curriculum is organized into five domains: 4th Grade Domains Math curriculum is organized into five domains: (1) operations and algebraic thinking; (2) number and operations in base ten; (3) numbers and operations - fractions; (4) measurement and data; and (5) geometry. Problem solving strategies are embedded into each of the five domains. All NC State Standards & objectives will be covered. 3

Reading Workshop Mini lesson is 15 minutes long Students read at school 25 minutes daily and complete daily reading job. Read 30-40 minutes at home each night;. They should log in their agenda, and parents should initial daily. Students work in small groups to master specific skills. Students will be choosing just right books.

Reading Reading passages and comprehension questions will be used as assessments throughout every unit of study EOG – More than half non-fiction(TFK) EOG passages are from a variety of genres including poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction 6

Students will use appropriate capitalization and punctuation. Conventions Students will produce complete sentence by recognizing and correcting fragments and run-ons. Students will use appropriate capitalization and punctuation. Students will identify parts of speech and use them correctly within a sentence. Students will use paragraphs to organize their ideas. Students will be expected to spell grade level words correctly. 7

WRITING Personal Narratives & Realistic Fiction Opinion Pieces – persuasive writing Informational – content writing based on research (Science & Social Studies) Throughout the year students will compose and be assessed on: 1 Narrative piece 1 Content/Informational piece 1 Opinion piece

Social Studies Essential Standards Concepts of Study Study geography and history of North Carolina Technology in the lives of North Carolinians Government and citizenship Culture and diversity of North Carolina The Social Studies standards will be met by using teacher created activities & non-fiction texts which will meet NC Standards Current event article and questions due monthly. 9

Science Essential Standards Taught using FOSS kits and supplemental materials; kits are rotated throughout the team 4th Grade Units: Food and Nutrition Energy (magnets & electricity) Earth Science (earth materials) Animal Adaptations (behavioral & physical) Moon/Space State Science Test in 5th grade 10
