Improving GCSE Writing Next Network Meeting – 8th March Bring along 1 resource which you have used to improve writing with year 10/11 classes

KS5 How to make the best of virtually no time KS5 How to make the best of virtually no time? Outcome: To think of ways of promoting independent learning

1. To analyse the needs of our students: plan for independent work New A level: What do they expect from our students: Induction booklet. What can I do at home to match the expectations: Podcasts, quizlet, Kahoot, whatsapp / office 365 (chat only in TL)… One to one conversations: What areas do you need to improve?

Your needs? TOP TIP: Don’t over use subjunctive!...use “pour”… Traffic light system with vocab or grammar. Demand them to use 2 greens… challenging accessible basic / too easy TOP TIP: Don’t over use subjunctive!...use “pour”… *Some schools start purely on grammar (y12) and then only have to revisit during the course (useful for new groups or external applicants knowledge check!)

And… Picture starters Dubbing a film (silent films) Presentations by students with challenge from teacher Puppets Taboo “spend, spend, spend”

2. To set high expectations Half an hour late: you are not allowed in. Flipped learning. The lessons are for debating using the vocabulary seen. - Regular homework: Kerboodle worksheets - Booklet of independent work: deadlines - Regular tests: Kerboodle assessments My job is not to mark the worksheets. The students will mark their own work and report to me. My job is to provoke thinking (help them evaluating, not talking) and improve their writing / speaking. and. Extra sessions for the works: Booklet for LCBA + El laberinto del fauno

Question generation… Command words: Evaluate / Examine / Analyse … … the way in which / how … … the use of XXXXXX… … demonstrates / shows / leads us to believe… Activity: work with a partner to generate three list question and devise a set of viable questions

Top tips for cultural knowledge Provide the students with a hand-out of facts (booklet) Show them the expectations: GCSE: Me AS: youth A Level: people Avoid commenting opinions/experiences unless they are set (and relevant) in the speaking countries. Could holidays be a source of research worth mentioning?

3. To consistently award success but punish lack of effort Looking into doing an A level trip potentially with other schools. Breakfast lessons Enrichment programme DVD/book borrowing system SIMS log Coming at the end of the day with the work done If not allowed in the lesson, expected to produce the same work in the study room (teacher drops in to double check every now and then) If persistent lack of effort, communication home.

KS5 Materials SOWs Mark Schemes Mini-Mocks (Listening and Reading) Kerboodle Assessments
