Introduction Christ’s second coming is past. Final judgment is past. End of the world is past. Spiritual adultery. Denies the resurrection of the dead. Galatians 1:8-9: “8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.” Examining Realized Eschatology
Examining Realized Eschatology Part 2: The Second Coming of Christ John 14:1-3
The 2nd coming of Christ RE teaches the 2nd coming of Christ is not His yet future coming at the end of the world and final judgment: 2 Thess. 1:7-9; 2 Pet. 3:10 “There is no scriptural basis for extending the second coming of Christ beyond the fall of Judaism.” King, SOP-1, p. 105 “It is the second coming and it is his coming in the fall of Jerusalem, for these are not two sepa-rate comings but one.” King, SOP-1, p. 70 “The end of the Jewish world was the second coming of Christ.” King, SOP-1, p. 70 “…prophecy found its complete fulfillment in the second coming of Christ (70 a.d., cvt) and now may be regarded as closed and consummated.” King, SOP-1, p. 65 Surely not! Who could believe such nonsense?! Are these things true? Did Jesus’ 2nd coming really take place almost 2,000 years ago, fulfilling all prophecy, as RE asserts? Examining Realized Eschatology
Has Christ come again? YES! All of these “comings” (except His incarnation) were NOT literal comings where Jesus came actually, personally and visibly. On the contrary, He came figuratively, representatively, and spiritually (except His incarnation). His incarnation: Jn. 1:1-3; Matt. 1:23 His kingdom: Matt. 16:28; Acts 2 Sending of Holy Spirit: Jn. 14:18; 15:26 Judgment of Jerusalem: Matt. 24:29-30 Against persecutors: Rev. 19:11-21 To those who keep His word: Jn. 14:23; Rev. 3:20 Unfaithful churches: Rev. 2:3, 5 Were any of these “comings” of Jesus the “second coming”? No! Examining Realized Eschatology
Bible and THE 2nd coming 9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. 11 They also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.’ Acts 1:9-11 (NASU) Acts 1:9-11 deals a death blow to RE’s assertion the 2nd coming of Christ was His coming in 70 a.d. How did He go to heaven? Actually, personally, visibly ! The apostles were “gazing intently into the sky while He was going” ! Undoubtedly and undeniably the apostles saw Jesus’ resurrected body ascend into heaven. Examining Realized Eschatology
Bible and THE 2nd coming Now, how was He to return? This did not happen in 70 a.d., but will happen when He comes again to judge the world, reward the saints and punish the wicked. Acts 17:31 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 Matthew 16:27 Matthew 25:31-46 Is Christ’s 2nd coming a figurative, spiritual coming as He came in 70 a.d.? No! The angels told the apostles, He “will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven” ! How did He go into heaven? Actually, personally and visibly ! His coming in 70 a.d. was not the “same way” as His true 2nd coming! 1 Thess. 4:16-17; Jn. 14:1-4; 2 Tim. 4:8; Heb. 9:27-28 Examining Realized Eschatology
RE is a contradiction! King’s quotes undeniably place the 2nd coming in 70 a.d. The destruction of Jerusalem was preceded by visible signs: Matt. 24:4-30; 1 Thess. 5:1-2; 2 Pet. 3:10 The disciples could “flee” the judgment and destruction of Jerusalem: Matt. 24:16 Not so for 2nd coming! Matt. 25:32; Rom. 2:16; Acts 17:30-31; Rom. 14:12; 2 Cor. 5:10; Rev. 20:12-16 The disciples who fled the destruction of Jerusalem were the disciples in “Judea” : Matt. 24:16, 21; Acts 17:30-31; 2 Cor. 5:10; Rev. 20:11-15 Examining Realized Eschatology
RE is a contradiction! The judgment/destruction of Jerusalem undeniably took place in the first century: Matt. 24:34 At the 2nd coming “the Son of man…shall reward every man according to his works” : Matt. 16:27 Did that happen in 70 a.d.? 2 Cor. 5:10; Acts 17:31 At the 2nd coming the “last enemy…will be destroyed… death” : 1 Cor. 15:26, 52-54 Have the funeral parlors went out of business?! Heb. 2:14-15; 1 Cor. 15:52; Rev. 20:14 At the 2nd coming the Lord promises to “transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body” : Phil. 3:20-21 Examining Realized Eschatology
RE is a contradiction! At the 2nd “coming of the Lord” “God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus” : 1 Thess. 4:15 70 a.d.? No! At the 2nd coming Jesus will be “revealed from heaven” and “in flaming fire” take “vengeance on those who do not know God and those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” : 2 Thess. 1:7-9 Did that happen in 70 a.d.? No! In 1 Corinthians 11 Paul instructs us concerning the Lord’s Supper. How long are we to partake? 1 Cor. 11:26 Many more contradictions between RE and scripture: Jn. 5:28-29; Acts 24:15; 1 Cor. 15:50-54; 1 Thess. 4:17; Rev. 1:7; Col. 3:4; Rev. 21:4; 2 Pet. 3:10-13 Examining Realized Eschatology
Conclusion Galatians 1:6 Ephesians 4:4-5 Jeremiah 616 Hebrews 9:28 RE clearly at odds w/scriptures concerning the 2nd coming. We are concerned for those caught up in RE. But it is undeniably a “damnable heresy” ! 2 Pet. 3:1 Galatians 1:6 Ephesians 4:4-5 Jeremiah 616 Hebrews 9:28 Acts 17:31 Titus 2:13 Examining Realized Eschatology
