Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health. Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health. Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.

Social Health – “Defining Who You Are” Attention Getter/Instruction: AG: Who is your role model? Why did you choose them as your role model? What significance or what role do they have to your life? (The student will keep these thoughts about their “role model” in their minds for the entirety of the class) Instruction: Duffy’s Cut Summary – (the students have a prior knowledge to Duffy’s Cut through the “death on a railroad” documentary. Hone in on why the Irish came (opportunity – American Dream) and the tragic result of their pursuit. Relating American Dream from the Irish perspective to today’s world. The dreams of students today here in America (Americans and Immigrants). Charles Barkley video, article and discussion “I am not a role model” – Charles Barkley

Social Health – “Defining Who You Are” Quotes from “I am not a role model” by Charles Barkley… “People have this role model thing completely screwed up. Is a role model just a celebrity that parents turn their kids over to? Can’t we do better than that? Is the best we can do for kids pointing them to celebrities they have no real chance of ever knowing?” Barkley said, “How crazy is it to get slammed for saying, Listen to your parents, listen to your teachers, listen to the responsible adults in your neighborhood or people who have done something with their lives.” “A role model should be among the people who can influence your direction in a real-life way.” This is why Charles Barkley among many of the current star athletes in today’s world are not role models to people except their children and the people close to them.

Social health – “Defining Who You Are” Instruction cont… Some students today do not have realistic dreams/pursuits Students desiring to be professional athletes are not chasing the dream of being a professional athlete…They are chasing all the benefits that come with being a professional athlete (money, fame, fortune, publicity, etc.). What is driving their pursuit is a life that will produce satisfaction. Define Satisfaction… Finding out who you are, what you are talented at and fulfilling the purpose you were made for by advancing the person beside you.

Social Health – “Defining Who You Are” Biblical Integration: We at Calvary value God’s Word (The Bible) as the authority of our lives. Satisfaction is found in an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ God’s Word tells us to “look not only to our own interest but also to the interest of others.” – Philippians 2:4 The discussion/instruction will lead to... The Irish had a dream to come to America for a better life (it was a realistic one that ended up tragic). Even though most students will pursue a dream that wont end in death, a lot of their dreams end in tragedy which leads them to living as though they were dead. A realistic dream can be pursued when a student or individual discovers their talents, gifts, and abilities, matches them to a vocation, seeks the road towards that career and then uses their gifts and experiences to advance the person beside them. (we as teacher’s know this best) The abilities discovered by students lead to a variety of careers…construction worker, dentist, doctor, accountant, business owner, Pastor, etc. I’ve found great rewards by becoming a teacher because I have the opportunity to advance the person beside me. However, I would not have arrived at this destination without the people above…my role models.

Social Health – “Defining Who You Are” Activity… “Time to be Honest” – The student will write up a report through answering these questions below. Resurrect the role model in your mind. Interview/Investigate your role model Trace back your role model’s family history and where they have immigrated from up to where they were born Point out significant moments in the story of your role model What role models were in their lives? How were they encouraged to pursue their dream? Finally, how did you meet your role model? Did you meet them? If you did not meet your role model…Is it possible for this “role model” to be a role model in your life? Can they help you pursue the opportunities in your life?

Social Health – “Defining Who You Are” Activity Cont… Discuss with your role model/Find a role model and have them help you answer these questions. What do you want to do with your life? Why? What do you think will bring fulfilment and joy to your life? Who influenced you to pursue that dream? Are your dreams realistic? What interruptions could you anticipate such as what the Irish experienced (maybe don’t think to that extreme, but what could destroy that dream)? What talents, abilities, skills, gifts, etc. do you have Based on the above, what could you see yourself doing in your life (Think beyond just your job…although that is important. Think what could you do in your family, church, friendships, etc. Based on your discussion with your role model, what dreams did you come up with? What conclusion did you come to regarding what you want to do with your life? What kind of life would push you towards satisfaction?

Social Health – “Defining Who You Are” Conclusion: Prepare the students for the upcoming presentation regarding their results to the project.
