Designing Your Path to Leadership Ashley Leak Bryant, PhD, RN, OCN®    Chair, ONS Leadership Development Committee Good Afternoon. I am Ashley Leak Bryant I am chair of the ONS Leadership Development Committee. Today we are going to talk a bit about how you can explore your own leadership development and how ONS can support you while on this journey.

Opportunities for You Local involvement with your chapter National involvement with ONS Publishing, project teams, course development, focus groups, present at Congress, online community participation National Leadership with ONS, ONCC or the ONS Foundation Each of these different opportunities bring different levels of involvement, leadership skills and interests. Getting involved with your local chapter is always a great way to get started with volunteering with ONS. Many chapters have a variety of ways to get involved and these opportunities can be short or long term so that you can find the best fit for your schedule. You can also get involved with ONS national through a number of different ways. ONS is regularly looking for members to publish, work on different project teams, develop or review course content, participate in focus groups, present at conferences and you can also share your expertise on the ONS Communities from your home. When you are ready for the next step, there are some higher level opportunities that require more of a commitment but are amazingly rewarding. Do you or someone you know have a passion for fundraising? Think about the ONS Foundation. Interested in governance work to support certifications? Think about volunteering with ONCC. The Leadership Development Committee will slate candidates for the position of Director at Large on the ONS Board and the Board will select the executive committee members like president, secretary, and treasurer. So this means that anyone interested in running for the board should also consider that they may have the opportunity to have a term in a different position. And if you are interested in joining the Leadership Development Committee, chat with a member of the ONS Board to express your interest. The Board appoints all members of the Leadership Development Committee.

Invest In You Leadership Self Assessment Attend a Career Center session during Congress. Have a conversation with your nurse leaders(s) at your work about your own leadership development. Request leadership development through your local ONS Chapter Your first stop should always be investing in you when it comes to your own leadership development. You can start by taking the Oncology Nursing Leadership Self Assessment. This tool is available at the ONS Website and is a great way to self-assess opportunities for growth. While you are at Congress, you should also plan to attend a session in the ONS Career Center. These presentations cover topics like resume writing, scholarships, and other topics that support your own leadership and career growth. Once you get home, make time to chat with your nurse leaders about your own leadership development. When your supervisor and colleagues are aware of your interests, you’d be amazed at the opportunities that begin to present themselves. This is also a great way to find a mentor who can also help guide your path.

Support for You Oncology Nursing Leadership Self Assessment Board Leadership: Nurses in Governance web course ONS Foundation Leadership Scholarship There is also some great support from your oncology nursing community. As I mentioned before, ONS offers the Leadership Self Assessment and also developed the Board Leadership: Nurses in Governance web course. This web course is free to ONS members and offers 4.78 contact hours. It is a great option as you consider the roles nurses play while participating on boards and helps provide some additional resources for topics such as fiscal oversight, succession planning, conflicts of interest, and legal issues. Additionally, there are leadership conferences that are non-nursing that are fantastic for building your skills. If you have a leadership conference you’d like to attend, consider applying for the ONS Foundation Leadership Scholarship. This scholarship covers up to $1,200 for a registration fee to attend a leadership based continuing education program. Just visit onsfoundation.org for more details.
