Throughout the world there is evidence of the positive impact on learning which is closely linked to the workplace. The main benefits of an apprenticeship model of learning include: promoting better collaboration between enterprises and education and training providers ensuring an enterprise led role in the design and assessment of programmes improving the competitiveness of companies opening up rewarding careers for a large segment of the population ensuring that theoretical learning in an education or training institution is strongly grounded in the practical experience of undertaking a real job, supplying job ready employees and providing an ideal learning mode for those who learn best by doing.

The employer must be approved to train apprentices. The employer must register you as an apprentice within two weeks of recruitment. In certain crafts, apprenticeship applicants are required to pass a colour vision test approved by SOLAS. Entry Requirements (pre2016) The minimum age at which the employment of an apprentice may commence is 16 years of age. The minimum educational requirements are: Grade D in five subjects in the Department of Education & Skills Junior Certificate Examination or an approved equivalent, or The successful completion of an approved Pre-Apprenticeship course or Three years’ work experience gained over sixteen years of age in a relevant designated industrial activity as SOLAS shall deem acceptable Entry Requirements (2016)+ Minimum entry criteria varies depending on apprenticeship.
