Presentation transcript:

_(your city’s name here) annual average rainfall is __ inches About how deep is that? Is it enough water to swim in? If we went outside would we have to wade through that water? Where does it go?

What would happen to water if I poured it out onto the desk?

Water can run-off ACROSS the top of or DOWN the side of the desk . This is caused by gravity and….. The topography of the desk is flat but the topography of the earth outside has hills and valleys along which water moves. Topography-- The Earth's surfaces, shapes and features

How else could water move along the earth’s surface? TOPOGRAPHY of the eastern United States How else could water move along the earth’s surface?

WATER MOVES UP Evaporation-- Process where a liquid turns to a gas at the surface of the liquid

What would happen to water if I poured it into this SOIL?

Water can move INTO a Surface Permeation-- Movement of a liquid, gas, or vapor through a solid   Water can move INTO a Surface Infiltration-- Process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil

What would happen to water if I poured it into a potted plant?

Water Can Move INTO a plant and leave as vapor (gas) Into the soil and then….. Water Can Move INTO a plant and leave as vapor (gas) Ground cover-- Any plant that grows over an area of ground Transpiration-- Process by which water taken up through a plant’s roots is passed up and out of the leaves and stems as water vapor (gas)

Water can move INTO storm drain or gutters What about man made features………? Water can move INTO storm drain or gutters

What kinds of bad things can end up in storm drains?
