Topography, Bathymetry, and an introduction to Earth’s processes WOSAT Presentation Topography, Bathymetry, and an introduction to Earth’s processes

Overview Ansonia High School– 10th grade P.S. Content Standards— Grade 9-10 Earth Sciences, Benchmark F Indicator 8 (emerging issues) Grade 9-10 Scientific Inquiry, Benchmark A Indicators 3 and 5 (const. models / present.) Grade 9-10 SWOK, Benchmark B Indicator 7 (building on previous info.)

Overview Instructional strategy: Topography Pre-test The “Hook”– stereoscopes Activity– clay models Activity– box topography Activity– Elk ridge Bathymetric “black box”

Stereoscopes

Clay models and Box topo.

Bathymetric Activity

Assessment Performance based Clay model Contour map Graphs Cardboard model Scatter plot Bathymetric map Standard written Pre-tests Numerous quizzes Unit exam

Data Results Clay/cardboard models– basic understanding of contour Contour map/graph—higher level concepts of what contour lines represent Bath. map/scatter plot– illustrated how contour maps are generated Quiz/Test– show a better grasp on topography and earth’s processes overall

Data Analysis Pre-test . . . Post-test . . . Showed some had ‘OK’ mapping / graphing skills, but lacked in overall understanding of topography Post-test . . . Students showed a greater depth of knowledge on the written response items

Reflections Modifications to pre-test Diversity in the complexity of contour maps Modifications to the structure of the tests 2 column, charts and graphs, multiple question items, etc. Images used in this presentation are from Yahoo search engine
