Carbonic Acid Most groundwater is slightly acidic due to carbonic acid. Carbonic acid forms when carbon dioxide gas dissolves in water and combines with.

What is Karst? A terrain, generally underlain by carbonate rocks (limestone, dolomite), in which the topography is chiefly formed by the dissolving.
WEATHERING AND EROSION.  Groundwater dissolves rock  Groundwater is often mildly acidic  Contains weak carbonic acid  Forms when rainwater dissolves.

Caves A cave is defined as an underground passage large enough for a person to crawl into, naturally formed, and in complete darkness.

Weathering and Erosion. Weathering Weathering is a set of physical, chemical and biological processes that change the physical and chemical properties.

Presentation transcript:

Karst Topography Dissolved Carbonate Rock 80+ either: Calcium Carbonate Limestone Dolomite Must have fissures for water transport. High water table and weather pattern with lots of rain. CaCO2 + H2O—CaCO3 +H Carbonic Acid continues to weather the Limestone or Dolomite, which mixes with water and becomes Carbonic Acid, and so on.

Dry Cave A cave where the water has receded and there is no water on the floor of the cave

Wet Cave A Wet Cave has standing water in the form of ponds or lakes, or moving water in the case of underground streams or dripping water from surface percolation.

Sinkholes Sinkholes, the Movie Sinkholes occur over time, as the limestone is worn away by water, and the ceiling of the cave collapses. National Geographic Florida Sinkholes

Disappearing Stream A Sinking Stream or Disappearing Stream is a stream that falls into a sinkhole and proceeds underground.

Underwater Cave Below sea level Deep underground below water table level Water level rises, caves previously above water are now below water.
