Welcome to Third Grade Informational Parent Night

Learn, Grow, Celebrate! Hassler’s goal is for the students to become an active community of learners. The students will work together cooperatively, and individually, in improving skills in reading, writing, mathematics, science discovery, social studies and character building. We look forward to the exciting year of growth educationally and collaboratively!

Policies Visiting your child – Please enter through the front door and stop at the front office. Obtain a visitor’s sticker and place it where it can be VISIBLE by any staff member. Thank you in advance for your help with this matter; this procedure helps ensure the safety of every child.

Special Occasions – Food items must be approved prior to celebration Special Occasions – Food items must be approved prior to celebration. Items may be purchased through the cafeteria. Please let your teacher know in advance when and what item you plan to purchase. *PTO will provide holiday snacks and a gift.

Tuesday Folders Tuesday Folders will come home most weeks on Tuesday and should be signed and returned on Wednesday. Occasionally due to a holiday or illness, the folder will go home on a Wednesday and returned on Thursday. This folder will contain the work your child has done through the previous week. It also will notify you of positive core values demonstrated, successes, academic concerns and/or work habit concerns. At 8:00, we are already pulling small groups, recording homework and reinforcing previously exposed skills.

Homework Math homework will be assigned Monday and is due on Friday. It is beneficial to let the child first use his or her own thinking. Encourage and help them use problem-solving strategies until they discover the correct answer. The faster misconceptions are cleared, the faster your child will be successful with the concepts. Checking their work with them is beneficial. Reading homework will consist of an at home reading log. Please record 60 minutes per week and include a signature on chart in the brads of the Homework Folder. Your child will be responsible for studying their spelling lists at home. Occasionally, there will be specific spelling homework.

Grades Major assessments – 50% Retakes – A student who scores below 70% on a major campus assessments may take a retest (usually occurs before school). The higher of the two scores will be taken, but not to exceed 75%. Benchmarks – There will be no retakes on any district benchmarks or common assessments. Benchmarks do not go home. Please schedule with your teacher to see your child’s test. Minor assessments – 50% Students who fail minor tasks will receive extra instruction in the subject area, but the original grade will not be replaced. Based on a campus decision, no extra credit will be given. You may also view your child’s grades online.

Grades Grades come from several sources including rubrics, practice handouts, benchmarks, campus assessments, interactive notebooks, and participation. Grades will be updated in Skyward weekly. Progress reports are sent home in the 4th week of a nine week period. This is to update you on your child’s grades. You may also log into Skyward (beginning September 7) to review your child’s grades.

Absences Students will have one day to make up work for each day they are absent.

See Your Child’s Grades

Teacher Web Pages School and teacher web pages give you access to important dates, information and resources. You can see your child’s weekly schedule (remember to wear tennis shoes on P.E. days), study guides, weekly curriculum content and links to useful interactive sites.

Instruction Instruction will take place in large group and small group settings. Large group instruction will take place daily modeling, practicing and applying grade level skills. Small group instruction will be individualized to work at each child’s level to make sure they are being challenged appropriately. *Note: Math and Social Studies textbooks are consumables. They are your child’s responsibility.

Math/Science Math and Science textbooks are available online. Math instruction will take place in with lots of hands-on activities and stations. We will use check points and assessments to guide instruction. Assessments will occur at the end of chapters, along with district common assessments. In science, our online textbook is used as a resource. We will participate in lots of hands-on activities. A study guide will be sent home for tests. *Note: Math and Social Studies textbooks are consumables. They are your child’s responsibility.

ELA All writing compositions are done in class. They will be graded on a writing scale of 1-4. At the beginning of each week, your child will compose their own Buddy Spelling List which will be written in their agenda. Since each list is based on individual spelling needs, spelling lists will not be posted on teacher website. Your child needs to study their words throughout the week by carefully looking at the words, saying them, visualizing them, writing them, and then checking the words. I will be helping your child learn how to study words effectively. Occasionally, I will give specific spelling homework. Spelling tests are given on Friday.

Reading Novels, a variety of texts, and reading textbooks are used for individual, small, and large groups instruction. Reader’s Workshop: 30 books from a variety of genres are expected to be read in class. Weekly your child will be updated and motivated on where they are in the 30 Books Club.

Social Studies Social Studies instruction will include projects and hands-on activities that will be completed in class. Study guides will be sent home before tests. *Consumable book – It is your child’s responsibility to maintain.

Hassler’s Core Values

Nurtured Heart We use as much positive reinforcement as possible with your child along with the rules to make the classroom a safe and nurturing place. Finding Greatness – Our goal is to find and acknowledge the positive core values within each student. This promotes a child’s self-worth, inner voice and self-discipline. Reset – Individuals will occasionally need a time-out to think about his or her choices and make a plan. Tickets or Class Dojo – Individuals earn tickets for displaying the core values. Student can use these tickets to purchase items in the classroom store.

Nurturing Atmosphere We will consistently reinforce positive character traits with praise and rewards while still setting firm boundaries. We try to use as much positive reinforcement as possible with your child along with the rules to make the classroom a safe and nurturing place. In keeping with this, any action that can harm a child in any way will result in an immediate trip to the office by any child involved.

Thank you for coming!
