PSLE – Placement Exam •Reflects the relative achievement level of pupils among their peers •Places pupils into different courses according to their academic ability •Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice
PSLE – Examinable Subjects English / Foundation English Mathematics / Foundation Mathematics Science / Foundation Science Mother Tongue* / Foundation Mother Tongue* *Not applicable to pupils exempted from MT All subjects carry equal weightage
A need for standardization of the raw scores in PSLE PSLE T-SCORE A need for standardization of the raw scores in PSLE Transformed Score or T-Score
Calculation of PSLE T-Score T-score = 50 +10(x – m)/SD Where x is the pupil’s mark (raw score); m is the average mark scored by all the pupils who sat for the subject; SD is the standard deviation
Example : Pupil A’s marks (X) in English exam = 80 Average mark (m) scored by all pupils = 68 Spread of marks (SD) around the average mark (m) = 14 T = 50 + 10 (80 – 68) 14 = 58.57
Example : Subject Raw Score (100%) T-Score English 85 62.14 Mathematics 80 58.57 Science Mother Tongue 90 65.71 Total 248.56
