School of Nursing and Health Professions   Reducing Patient Supply Waste Through Nurse Education to Improve Quality of Patient Care in the Clinical Microsystem Lale Johnston, MSN, RN School of Nursing and Health Professions Problem Methods Results Conclusion SWOT Analysis I identified the need for an improvement project for reducing patient supply waste after the microsystem analysis in the 19 bed orthopedic unit. I estimated the average cost of discarded supplies as $50 per patient, which is $25,000 annually. With increased nurse efficiency and saved RN times, estimated the saving would be $188,100 first year and $203,100 second year.  The purchase of new Dynamaps will help decrease staff frustrations and stress which will be reflected with patient experience, increased HCAHPS scores, and more reimbursement for the organization which will help increase the overall quality of patient care. Aim My global aim was to increase the quality of patient care by reducing patient supply waste 50% in the microsystem to help save costs while increasing staff efficiency and improving the overall patient and staff satisfaction. Lewin’s Three Stage Change Model After the implementation of project, the estimate of patient supply waste was $35 per patient annually. Even though I did not reach my goal of a 50% reduction in supply waste, this was still a great start to help improve not only the quality of patient care, but also the patient and staff satisfaction.
