information technology enriching learning iTEL@BellmereSS BYO iPad Program information technology enriching learning
What is technology? A pencil is technology and for many years now we have been allowing BYO pencils..... Although the iPad is a VALUABLE learning tool, it doesn't replace everything we do..... Students still build with blocks, get messy painting, write with pencils, manipulate concrete materials, collaborate etc. With an iPad, students just may take a photo, explain what they have done and how they have done it and share it with their parents...
Why the iPad? Supported device by DETE. Minimal technical support. Large amount of apps that allow differentiation of learning for students. Consistency of user experience.
What are we trying to achieve? Vision A Community of Learners – Hand in Hand We Learn Mission World Class eLearning Opportunities Outcomes Skillset, Productivity, Engagement & Learning
1:1 Technical Solutions Harnessing the Platform relates to the infrastructure necessary to support your initiative and how it is used and maintained. It includes: - BYOd vs School Owned Devices - Consideration of Devices / Apps / Software - Network Infrastructure including Wireless Capacity - Cybersafety and Using the Internet appropriately - School Technician
BYO vs School Owned It is important that the school has capacity to support the chosen device/s and that the target of 100% uptime can be achieved (meaning that the device has little to no down time). While many assume that BYO reduces the cost of the school needing to purchase devices, additional costs to support these devices including Bandwidth, WiFi access, additional devices etc. can easily increase.
Managing the Devices... Teacher allocated device - managed by the teacher Student BYO device - managed by the parent Other school device - managed via Apple Configurator.
Consideration of Devices / Apps / Software The focus should always be on the learning intent rather than the device or the app however ultimately, students will use these to support their knowledge and understanding of the learning intent. It is best if the apps/software are carefully chosen from a selection criteria that supports teaching and learning as well as allows students to be cybersafe. Apps are usually classed as 'Content or Creation'.
Required Apps Selection Process Criteria is used to select required apps for the iTEL@BellmereSS BYO iPad Program (final approval for app selection is by the Principal or delegate). The 2 levels of required apps at Bellmere SS are: Whole School (all classes at Bellmere SS use these apps) Year Level (all classes in a year level use these apps) An apps audit will occur at the end of each year to finalise required apps for the following year. Bellmere SS will endeavour to monitor apps for changes to ensure they continue to comply with our apps selection process. Apps may be requested by the individual classroom teacher to support class learning or recommended to individual students to support individual students’ specific learning needs. Approval for these recommendations is taken through the eLearning Committee.
App design - Design graphics/sound are appealing and visually stimulating App promotes creativity and imagination App encourages the use of higher order thinking skills including remembering understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating and creating Appropriate Content - Content is appropriate for age of student (recommended age may suggest otherwise) Differentiation - App settings and/or content can be easily customised to meet individual student needs Engaging - App is motivating Feedback - App provides specific and useful feedback General - No in-app purchases required for use Privacy - Student personal details are not shared Students are not required to enter personal details to create an account
Relevance - The app’s focus has a strong curriculum connection appropriate for the intended learning Sharing - Content/Data can easily be exported, copied or printed Usability - Student can launch and operate the app independently User Data - User data is saved from session to session
Evidence of Success Data – NAPLAN and local measure (including behaviour and attendance) Surveys Feedback – Parent, Student, Teacher Celebrate success and achievements publicly e.g. school assembly, school media channels Reflect on successes and challenges.
