Project Background Use of Electro-Mechanical Actuators (EMA) in place of hydraulic actuators in aircraft applications has received significant attention in recent years due to their lack of supporting hardware, thereby reducing mass, volume, and maintenance. Benefit is not without risk. Failure modes associated with current EMAs can often occur without sufficient notice. To be widely-utilized fault detection and failure prediction methodologies must be an integral part of the Health & Usage Monitoring System (HUMS). State-of-health prediction in engineering systems is a rapidly evolving field that has a strong application to flight actuation. Moog controller and LVDT that has been offered for donation to be installed and commissioned at RIT for future flight actuator HUMS research projects. P12251 11/8/2018

Project Scope Understand EMA & Controller Understand LVDT Hardware (Physical & Electronic) Basic Operation Understand LVDT Output Signal Fabricate and Install EMA Mount Passive Load Assembly LVDT Mount Post Fabrication and Installation, utilize dSPACE Interface with Controller Interface with LVDT Implement Closed Loop Control of System P12251 11/8/2018

Project Deliverables Test platform to be installed securely in lab 09-2383. Test platform to be modified to accommodate EMA, LVDT, and Passive Load Assembly. Components to be properly connected to allow communication and provide power. Implement dSPACE as a means to control the devices in a closed-loop system. P12251 11/8/2018

Group Behavioral Norms All Group Members are expected to be respectful, honest, productive, responsible, accountable, helpful, and on time. To ensure a balanced distribution of work, a weekly discussion will be held to inform group members of other responsibilities outside of MSD. Individual's strengths are to be evaluated and discussed among the group. Interaction with Dr. Kolodziej will be mainly through our weekly meeting and email updates. Inter-group communication will consist of group meetings, email updates, and phone conversations. Decisions will be made only after receiving consensus of the group. It is expected that all group members will complete tasks on time and to the best of their ability. Each group member has agreed to manage conflict within the group by being open to the opinions and ideas of their fellow group-mates. P12251 11/8/2018
