Follow the SMART rules Keep your personal information safe! If you wouldn’t say it to a stranger on the street, don’t share it with strangers on the internet…

Follow the SMART rules Don’t meet up! Online games can be a great place for chatting to your friends. Always know who you are talking to. If an adult or child who you don’t know ever asks you to meet up, say no and report it…

Follow the SMART rules Accepting Think before you accept something from someone online e.g. a file, a download, a picture etc. It may contain a virus. If you don’t know who it’s from, and it has an attachment… DELETE IT!

Follow the SMART rules Reliable Not everyone online is trustworthy. Somebody may be lying about their age and who they are. Make sure you know who you are talking to and use reputable sites and services to protect you and your computer.

Follow the SMART rules Tell Tell a parent, carer or trusted adult if someone, or something makes you feel worried or uncomfortable online. Also, tell someone if a friend of yours needs help online too.

What else can you do? Make sure you have a strong password. Try to make it 8 to 10 digits in length. Mix case, use numbers and special characters. Use security software. Keep software and apps up to date. Virus scan any data sent to you and include USB’s. Be careful what you share. Be careful what you say about other people. Don’t answer requests for personal info until you are sure you know who the request is from. Ask if you are not sure.

What else can you do? If you do not know the sender bin it. If you are unsure or wary of anything on the Web then don’t use it. Backup your PC, tablet or phone. In the event of a problem an IT technician maybe able to recover your device for you. Tell somebody what has happened. Get your parent, guardian, teacher or another responsible adult to decide if a crime agency needs to be involved.

Phishing Phishing is a form of fraud in which the attacker tries to learn information such as login credentials or account information by masquerading as a reputable entity or person in an email, Instant Message or other communication channel.
