Light Haden Brill

What Does Light Do? It reveals and illuminates things and makes them easy to see.

Matthew 7:13-14 A blind man carried a lit lantern wherever he went. When asked why, he said, “ So no one stumbles over me.” We don’t need to be stumbling blocks for anyone. We are supposed to shine a light so that others may find the path as well. 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Matthew 7:13-14 ESV

Can light and darkness be in the same place? No, light casts out darkness. The definition of darkness is the absence of light. So even if it’s “dark”, there is still light. 2The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. Genesis 1:2-4 ESV

Light doesn’t just make things visible. Light creates warmth, comfort, and cheer. 7 Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. Ecclesiastes 11:7 (ESV) Being scared of the dark, nothing was better than turning on a light, and feeling safe again as a child. We need to be the light for those that are in the dark and scared.

Light helps guide people home. 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. Matthew 2:9 (ESV) It helped guide the shepherds to Jesus.

Light is not selfish. Light does not shine for itself to be seen by others, but to give light so others can see.

Light can be painful. Waking up to a light being turned on what is your reaction? Covering your eyes and getting agitated We have to gently show those that are lost the light and not “bright light” them immediately.

Light burns sacrificially. To have light, something has to burn. Something has to be consumed. As Christians we have to be willing to sacrifice time, energy, talent, money, and other things to be a light. We are giving our time to worship God right now. 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Matthew 16:24 (ESV)
