Anson Jones Presidency/Texas Annexation Chapter 14 and 15 Notes Anson Jones Presidency/Texas Annexation

Chapter 14 Section 1 Essential Question: Did foreign countries recognize Texas?

Foreign Recognition- If other countries see Texas as independent, then Mexico might follow Recognition would lessen the possibility of new war w/ Mexico and might encourage immigration to Texas Texas needed foreign trade and loans Recognition by US might lead to annexation Many Americans feared that recognizing Texas would lead to war w/ Mexico Northern states were against slavery and did not want Texas to join US (Texas was a slave country and would be a slave state) Andrew Jackson thought TX population was too small with too much debt and a powerful enemy (Mexico)

Recognition of Texas by Others European nations wanted TX to stay independent and not join the US because the US would grow larger France was the first country to recognize Texas in 1839 Mexico still refused

Chapter 14, Section 2 Essential Question: Will Mexico recognize Texas as independent?

Conflict with Mexico Mex. and TX argued over borders of Texas 1841, Santa Fe Expedition ended in failure to take control of New Mexico and cost a great sum of $ Mexican leaders were upset so they began invading Texas France and Britain pressured Mexico to be peaceful w/TX Mexico did not want annexation of Texas to US so they agreed to peace

Chapter 14, Section 3 Essential Question: Who was the final president of the Republic?

Anson Jones Presidency Anson Jones shared the same views as Houston Jones continued Houston’s policy of cutting spending and peace w/Indians as increased debate about annexation continued, value of Texas currency began to grow Jones wanted Texas to have an option to join US or gain recognition from Mexico most Texans were not interested in negotiating with Mexico

Chapter 15 Section 1 Essential Question: Did the US want Texas to join them?

Deciding Factors of Annexation Americans were divided over annexation North was against slavery South had agricultural economy and needed slavery Many believed that it was the US’s Manifest Destiny to annex Texas and take over the continent of North America
