Overview of course 50% Exploring & Creating 20% Film outside Hollywood Exam: 1 Hour 30% Exploring Film Exam: 1.5 Hours Coursework

Exploring Film Develop knowledge and understanding about film Study of film language (micro, macro, how and what films communicate) Study one set genre Set genre for first examination in Summer 2009 and last examination in 2012 will be Disaster films. Gain an awareness of the contemporary film industry (mainly Hollywood) and of the audiences for film.

Exploring Film outside Hollywood Candidates study one film produced outside Hollywood from a prescribed list in terms of: characters narratives representations themes/issues raised by the film how film language contributes to those representations

External Assessment – Exploring Film Genre Set 4 Compulsory Questions (stepped questions) Respond to an unseen moving image extract One question on film language One question on genre Respond to a still image One question on marketing/promotion Creative Tasks Series of creative tasks assessing knowledge and understanding of films in relation to audience and industry

Assessment: Film outside Hollywood 3 Compulsory Questions One question on representation in close study film People, places, events One question on issues raised in close study film One creative task Centred on personal response – reviews, forum posting

Exploring & Creating Four main elements: Film Exploration Written exploration of micro features in an extract of candidates choice ( words) Pitch & Preproduction 150 word pitch for an imaginary film. This should form the basis of the preproduction tasks (chosen from a set of four options) Production Chosen from a set of 5 options Evaluation Brief reflective evaluation on learning about key study areas (Film language, audience and organisations)
