Alphabet Poem This poem requires 26 lines Each line must begin with the next letter of the English alphabet, starting with the letter A and ending with the letter Z Does not have to rhyme, but it can Challenge yourself and make each line a complete thought Suggested themes: Countries of the World, Animals, Colors, Food
Haikus and Tankas A Japanese form of poetry that traditionally is about nature They each have a different number of lines Haiku = 3 Tanka = 5 Because they have a different number of lines they also have a different meter Haiku = 5-7-5 Tanka = 5-7-5-7-7 There are no requirements for rhyme scheme for either poem
Limericks Must be constructed of 5 lines Must follow this rhyme scheme: AABBA Must possess a specific rhythm Typically starts with ‘There once a …” Topic: something funny, but it does need to be school- appropriate
Rhyme Scheme A rhyme scheme is a pattern of similar sounds, typically found at the end of the line Rhyme is usually created with similar vowel sounds: AEIOU Some poems require a specific rhyme scheme, others allow you to make your own pattern You label a rhyme scheme with the letters of the English alphabet, every line that rhymes with each other must be labeled with the same letter
