To Kill a Mockingbird Essay Topics Choose ONE of the five sentences below and consider whether you agree or disagree with the idea. Build a persuasive essay in which you examine the idea in the statement and either prove or disprove it using an example from To Kill a Mockingbird and a separate example from our modern world (1980 to today). This persuasive essay will require you to dig into Harper Lee’s novel to provide textual support for your stance, as well as evidence of research on the modern example that you include in your argument. Be sure to keep track of your source citation material, as M.L.A. in-text citation and a Works Cited page are required. Topic Options: 1. America will never achieve true racial and social equality. 2. Friends are a more powerful influence on children than parents. 3. The quietest people are often the most powerful. 4. A lady knows that one can trap more flies with sugar than vinegar. 5. It is impossible to become a strong, productive adult if one had an abusive or neglected childhood.

Examples: By examining the long-term participation, the personal impact, and the previous experiences of a parent, it is clear that parents have a greater influence in a child’s future. By examining a quiet person’s actions, words, and observations, it is clear that the quietest are more powerful. By examining the history of people, the reluctance to change, and the continued injustice in America’s society, it is clear that America will never be racially and socially equal.

Writing a Three-Point Thesis The statement above is incorrect because reason 1, reason 2, and reason 3. The quietest people are more powerful because they observe more, their words hold more influence, and their actions hold more meaning. Claim+Evidence=Thesis

Introduction Paragraph Begin introduction with a good hook. Explain your hook and how it relates to the topic you will discuss. Transition into the last sentence which will be your thesis. Example: In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch said, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,” (Lee 101). When Atticus stated the quote, he was referring to the current fight against the injustice towards his defendant, Tom Robinson. Essentially, Atticus was trying to display the importance of continuing the fight against racial inequality. Because there are so many who are still willing to fight for the equality of all citizens, I believe that America will eventually reach a state of true equivalence. This uniformity between racial and social classes will be achieved because of the individuals willing to fight, the shift of ideas in culture, and the increasing awareness of inequality through publicized events.
