Advanced Transit Systems Opportunity for Deployments Walter Kulyk, P.E Las Vegas, NV November 9, 2017

Defining Automated Transit Systems Automated Metro Systems Defined in IEC 622767; Automated Urban Guided Transport Safety Requirements Generally limited to regional line-haul systems Automated People Mover Systems Defined in ASCE-21; Automated People Mover Standard Generally applicable to sub regional and major activity centers Circulator/connector systems, including conventional APM, AGT, and Automated Transit Network (ATN) systems Walt (when features include enclosed passenger cabins and fully automated operations, which are generally addressed through compliance with the)

Defining Automated Transit Systems Fixed Route Line-Haul Systems Protected Transit Ways (but also allowing for transit vehicles to cross over other traffic lanes when this movement is protected by traffic signal preemption) Transit Network Systems (generally when the technology applications are operating in Demand Response Mode) Connected and Automated Roadways Vehicles in Transit Service (generally carrying multiple travel parties in the same vehicle, operating in mixed traffic) Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) applications Hybrid Transit Operations Automated operating systems Multimodal, connected and integrated environments Fixed Route Line-Haul Systems on Protected Transit ways (but also allowing for transit vehicles to cross over other traffic lanes when this movement is protected by traffic signal preemption) Transit Network Systems (generally when the technology applications are operating in Demand Response Mode) Autonomous and Connected Roadway Vehicles in Transit Service (generally carrying multiple travel parties in the same vehicle, while operating in mixed traffic) Hybrid Transit Operations (involving automated operating systems that enhance all modes of transportation)

History of Transit Automation UMTA DPM Demonstration 1970s Planning leading to several deployments Morgantown PRT, Detroit DPM, Jacksonville DPM, Miami DPM UMTA Studies and Research Advanced Group Rapid Transit Reduced Funding Starting in early 80s Automated Highway Systems (AHS) Early studies at Ohio State Univ. from 1964 to 1980 DOT ITS Program Significant Focus on AHS starting in 1993 Connected Vehicle Initiative Walt Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) Downtown People Mover (DPM) Demonstration Advanced Group Rapid Transit (AGRT)

History of Transit Automation Results A handful of PRT systems deployed, mostly oversees Over a hundred DPMs deployed, mostly locally and privately funded airport systems No significant full scale testing, demonstrations in the U.S. Awareness of benefits of advanced automated systems lacking among decision makers Walt Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) Downtown People Mover (DPM) Demonstration Advanced Group Rapid Transit (AGRT)

Opportunities for Deployment Activity Centers Satellite Centers Regional and Metro Line-Haul Networks First Mile – Last Mile Connections Fixed Route Line-haul Metro Bus Systems on Protected Transit ways and in Regular Traffic Autonomous and Connected Vehicles in Transit Service Demand Response Transit Networks Intermodal Connections for Normal and High Speed Applications Walt

Development Realities No well-developed and coordinated strategic plan for the national deployment of automated transit systems Development of automation technology currently being focused on vehicular technology and not necessarily network or community automation. Entrenched interests in research and operations and funding mechanisms. Walt

Barriers To Implementation Institutional Inertia for Classic Bus and Rail Past PRT Industry Hype Bias in Various National Industry Associations Limited Local, State, and Federal Funding Regulations that Inhibit New Innovative Systems Lack of Industry Strategic Plan Lack of Full Transit Industry Knowledge and Understanding of Automated Systems Lack of Recent Studies and Research Lack of Full Scale Testing and Demonstrations Walt

Necessary Actions & Recommendations Continuous Education and Outreach Identify Champions at Local Level Interact with Executive Branch of Governments Interact with Legislative Branch of Governments Interact with National Organizations Develop Public Policy and Support Fund Studies, Research Fund Full Scale Testing and Demonstrations Walt
