The meaning of each prophet’s name: Minor Prophets The designation “Minor” is not given based on the importance of the material contained, but rather the shortness of each respective writing. The meaning of each prophet’s name: Nahum – “Consolation” (630-612 BC) Habakkuk – “Embrace” (612-606 BC) Zephaniah – “God Hides” (625 BC)

Nahum Read aloud from Nahum 1:1–8 looking for words and phrases that describe the nature of God, including His power and His being slow to anger and also his feelings about Nineveh. Define the word ‘trust’ According to verse 7, what will the Lord be for those who trust Him? From Elder Scott: “To trust means to obey willingly without knowing the end from the beginning.” (“Trust in the Lord,” Ensign, Nov. 1995, 17). Read Nahum 1:15. Habakkuk The book of Habakkuk contains an exchange between Habakkuk and the Lord. The prophet Habakkuk may have lived sometime between the fall of the northern and southern kingdoms. Habakkuk learned that the Lord would use a wicked nation (the Babylonians) to destroy the kingdom of Judah. This troubled Habakkuk, and he asked the Lord why He would use a wicked people to destroy His chosen people. The Lord answered kindly and encouraged patience, assuring Habakkuk that in time the wicked Babylonians would also be punished. From this exchange we can learn about the value of taking our troubles and questions to Heavenly Father in honest prayer.

Habakkuk What did Habakkuk complain about in Habakkuk 1:1-3? How would you summarize the Lord’s response to Habakkuk’s complaints in Habakkuk 1:5? Next, read Habakkuk 3:17–19, looking for what Habakkuk learned from his dialogue with the Lord (a hind is a deer). Zephaniah 1-2 The prophet Zephaniah warned the kingdom of Judah of approaching destruction. Zephaniah’s prophecies also apply to the latter days and warn of the calamities to come before the Second Coming of the Savior. Read Zephaniah 1:14–15 looking for what the nation of Judah will experience because of their sins.  Read Zephaniah 2:1–3, looking for what the Lord counseled the Jews to do before the day of destruction. Discuss: What does the word ‘meek’ mean? President Hinckley taught, “Meekness implies a spirit of gratitude as opposed to an attitude of self-sufficiency, an acknowledgment of a greater power beyond oneself, a recognition of God, and an acceptance of his commandments” (“With All Thy Getting Get Understanding,” Ensign, Aug. 1988, 3–4). Zephaniah 3 Read Zephaniah 3:8 aloud. What do you think it means to “wait” upon the Lord? President Eyring taught, ““The word wait in scripture language means to hope for or anticipate” (“Waiting Upon the Lord” [Brigham Young University fireside, Sept. 30, 1990], 4; speeches.byu.edu). Discuss: What are some ways we can show that we hope for and anticipate the Second Coming? Read Zephaniah 3:17–20 aloud, looking for what the Lord promised those who wait upon Him. What principle can we learn from these verses about waiting upon the Lord?
