Challenges facing Specialist Dental Pathways Variation in commissioning and contracting mechanisms Growth in demand Secondary Care Dental Services, RTT Intermediate Minor Oral Surgery Services (IMOS) Sedation Services Community Dental Services/Paediatric dental services/Orthodontics/Restorative dentistry

West Yorkshire Dental and Oral Surgery 274 General Dental Practices 5 secondary care dental providers 5 Intermediate Minor Oral Surgery providers – legacy arrangements from PCT era No national commissioning guidance No standard referral criteria Limited clinical leadership Increased demand Paucity of data and referral/treatment data RTT breaches (18 weeks) Unsustainable costs

NHS England North (Yorkshire and the Humber) Secondary Care Dental Commissioning Strategy Review of provision Publishing of national commissioning guides Commissioning Strategy Reduce inequity Improve management at primary care level Manage oral surgery demand: Re-provision of IMOS, West Yorkshire Introduction of an Oral Surgery Referral Management Service for West Yorkshire Managed Clinical Network for Oral Surgery in WY

RMS requirements Single point of entry for all oral surgery referrals for onward NHS treatment within West Yorkshire. Allocation to the appropriate oral surgery provider based on clinical need and criteria Improve the patient experience and outcomes by the allocation of referrals to the appropriate service closer to the patient’s home or place of work, where appropriate. Support patient choice. Reduce waiting times for oral surgery by managing demand across all providers in line with available and appropriate oral surgery capacity in West Yorkshire. Reduction in the number of inappropriate and unnecessary referrals across the oral surgery provision. Improved quality of referral information and reduction in the number of incomplete referrals. Improved business intelligence, data and management information for the commissioners. Improved workforce intelligence for education and training purposes. Support the drive to a future paperless system.
