Secondary Mathematics Scheduling Jennifer L. Curtis, Ed.D. K-12 Section Chief Mathematics February 9, 2016 Good Afternoon. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to join our webinar on scheduling for 2014-15 secondary Mathematics. My name is Jennifer Curtis and I serve the State of NC as the K-12 Math Section Chief.

Format of Webinar Informational slides: current Math Courses and pathways, course codes, plus: Substitution and CTE Courses SREB Math Ready course Questions and your Concerns

Current Courses & Paths Available 2015-2016 SY All students now Future Ready Core (FRC) There are NOT any numbers following FRC anymore Four math credits are required for graduation per Policy GCS-N-004 which can be found at http://sbepolicy.dpi.state.nc.us/ Math I, Math II, Math III- student path for ALL who enrolled as High School freshman for the first time in 2013-2014 SY and beyond Fourth Math course should be aligned with post- HS plans fo student & can be Math III

Fourth Math Course Choices Though four math courses are required for graduation, FOUR LEVELS are NOT Students who take a foundations or other lower level course may choose to not take a fourth level math after Math III Math III then becomes their fourth and final math course Not something that DPI encourages because it may limit University access. because it may limit University access or unintentionally create less opportunities for students especially from marginalized groups

Review of 4th Courses (Substitution NOT included, Endorsements NOT included) Advanced Functions & Modeling (AFM), Discrete, Pre- Calculus, Integrated Math IV (IM4), AP Stats, AP Calculus (AB & BC) and various Community College Math Courses (for UNC-bound students), Essentials for College Math (ECM SREB Math READY) Independents, Community College, Tech School fourth math courses include all of the above plus: Analytical Geometry, Trigonometry, Probability & Statistics, Mindset

Other Courses for Math Credit Refer to Options Chart at this link http://maccss.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/file/view/Math%20Options %20Chart%209.5.2014.pdf/522504358/Math%20Options%20 Chart%209.5.2014.pdf Discussion of CTE courses for math credits, substitutions, SLD Math Students & OCS Discussion of Rigor in Accountability – as it relates to above

ECM SREB Course Information Will be accepted for at least two more years by UNC system as meeting minimum course requirements (MCR) that include a FOURTH LEVEL of mathematics Gave 3 year preliminary acceptance depending on data and implementation study This means that students can take the course through next year 2016-17. Pending study, may be accepted longer. Entering freshman students UNC 2017-18 are guaranteed to use course to meet MCR.

Placement into ECM - SREB Math Ready Course Code is 24082X0 – no honors level Emphasizes understanding of math concepts; equips students with higher-order thinking skills which enables them to apply math skills, functions and concepts in multiple scenarios College bound non-STEM majors (math credit) OR as a bridge course between Math III and Pre- Calculus for STEM majors (elective credit)

ECM - SREB Placement continued Should not be in lowest quartile achievement of first 3 math courses unless extenuating circumstances If senior D1/D2 ATHLETE who has multiple math failures or lacks all content & elective credit… do not enroll to obtain credit in math Should have scored 17-21on math portion of ACT – not mandatory, just a guideline.

Graduation Requirements/Reports Power School is still being updated with new graduation requirements for this class of seniors Reports will not show proper endorsements or math paths as satisfied until this is finished Early graduates will need overrides if not done in time.

Questions Thank you for attending today. Please enter any questions that you have that were not answered today. Webinar will be archived at both sites
