Today’s Resource Management Challenges Title Month Year IT Service Availability Today’s Resource Management Challenges New Service Creation Storage Resource Management Network Resource Management Server Resource Management Application Resource Management Data center sprawl Management silos Service availability New service creation So, let’s now discuss your customer’s biggest challenges around resource management: Faster and more efficient service delivery is the new bottom line for IT data center operations..Now viewing itself as a provider of integrated services to the rest of the business, IT’s focus has dramatically shifted from merely managing the infrastructure to optimizing its service delivery capabilities. To solve this big challenge, data centers need management capabilities that span across the different IT resource domains in the data center – storage, as well as networks, servers, applications and so on. There are lots of good tools that manage the individual domains…However, they can create management silos that can lead to significant inefficiencies and risk exposures… Compounding the challenge is data center sprawl and manual processes which add another order of complexity. As such, IT is not agile. It is unable to change fast enough to consistently meet service levels and deliver new services. So, how can businesses orchestrate the domain resources TOGETHER to deliver the services that IT has to deliver to support the business? Today, EMC provides storage resource management with ControlCenter. An important building block and anchor with our large install base, but it’s only the beginning.. Our “big idea” is to provide deep integration across the different domains– networks, storage, servers, and applications - discover and model these domains in real-time, and understand how they work together to deliver IT services to end users.. Take incident management, for example, where EMC today can help pinpoint the root cause problem anywhere in the data center and assess its impact on the rest of the infrastructure – networks, applications, servers, storage...This empowers organizations to quickly figure out not only what’s wrong (ie, slow or down applications) but what needs to be fixed first…A significant gain in efficiency for any data center operations team. Meeting the Challenge: Key EMC Assets Title Month Year Meeting the Challenge: Key EMC Assets 3. Business Impact Visibility Models behavior Cross-silo relationships Scales broadly 2. Cross-Domain Automation Automated Analysis & Root Cause Application Dependency Mapping So, as you can see, EMC is in fact helping customers today to automate their data center operations. We are doing this by delivering integrated resource management capabilities that are built on proven and industry-leading “automation intelligence” building blocks: For incident management, EMC Smarts automatically discovers and models the infrastructure. It understands the generic attributes of these resources, their relationships, and the common problems associated with each of them. Then, when there is a service-affecting problem, Smarts automatically pinpoints the root cause problem and its impact on other resources. No rules-writing required. The only solution in the marketplace that can make that claim. Application dependency mapping from Smarts ADM can then automatically map the dependencies from each service or application down to the domain elements below that participate in delivering that service – thus linking the infrastructure dynamically now to the service or application! EMC does this non-intrusively (no agents) and in real-time. Again, the only solution in the marketplace that can make that claim.. For storage resource management, ControlCenter automatically discovers the storage environment; reports on health, utilization and performance; and can automatically provision storage minimizing any errors in the process. Together, these solutions enable IT today to become a more agile partner to the business. Top-down business impact visibility Manage end-to-end services Deliver new services more quickly 1. EMC: ITIL Process Automation & CMDB Population Title Month Year EMC: ITIL Process Automation & CMDB Population Service Delivery Capacity Management Availability Management Financial Management IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Defines best practices for IT Operations Supports IT services management (ITSM) for business alignment and operational efficiencies EMC opportunity: Incident Management with Smarts CMDB (Configuration Management Database) Key enabler for ITIL Comprehensive inventory of data center infrastructure (servers, apps, storage, networks) EMC opportunity: Feed CMDB with Application to infrastructure dependency mapping with Smarts ADM ITIL projects have become a de facto methodology to define best practices for IT Operations. They present a set of prescribed processes that include people and procedures, describing how these processes work together to ensure a consistent set of IT services to the rest of the business. Many people call this “IT Service Management” and it has become the new standard by which CIO’s are driving consistency throughout their organizations. EMC Smarts users can quickly determine the root cause of any incident across their entire IT domain, including storage, application, and network issues and answers to the critical troubleshooting question “where’s the problem?” Smarts, via Storage Insight, can determine storage related issues and can also launch drilldown access to ADM configuration details to gives users visibility into their applications in the context of the underlying infrastructure. Through the Smarts Service Assurance Manager (SAM), users can visually correlate the potential application impact of infrastructure failures (networks, storage) by displaying the software services running on impacted hosts as well as other connected software services. Bottom-line: EMC Smarts and Storage Insight should be part of any ITIL incident management conversation in your accounts At the center of these processes is a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) which provides a federated data store containing the configuration items (CIs) that IT manages (configuration records for servers, apps, network devices, storage arrays, etc.). A CMDB also must contain the relationships and dependencies across these elements as to how they work together to deliver an application service – these are called “Application Dependencies” and are at the core of what Application Discovery Manager provides. ADM can populate any CMDB that the customer has selected: 3rd party CMDBs, home grown CMDBs, or ADM can even provide a “fast-start” foundational CMDB for customers who have not selected one yet. Bottom-line: ADM should be part of any CMDB conversation in your accounts ADM enables customers to discover their entire application infrastructure and map all resources and dependencies, enabling enterprises to manage relationships, impact, change and configuration, demand, usage, and service levels. With the real- time, automated ADM dependency catalog, customers can eliminate reliance on tribal-knowledge and guess-work and avoid change-induced service degradations & failures.
