Today we are going to talk about… Counselors and Learning Consultant – Who are we? Daily Schedule Courses Registration Cards August Registration

A counselor is someone your ChILD can talk to! Lisa Elder Last names: A – H Erin Moran Last names: I – M Michelle Rupp Last names: N - Z  

What Does a Counselor Do? Helps students with scheduling and questions. Helps students work out problems with school, friends, or personal matters. Makes classroom presentations on topics such as making good choices, career exploration, etc.

What Does the Learning Consultant Do? Teach supervised studies and support Viking student center lunch drop-in Student Placement recommendations M-step and 504 plans Support teachers and students in the classroom

Typical Day Start 7:30 a.m. – End 2:27 p.m. 6 periods (about 58 minutes each) Homeroom 7:30-7:40 1st hour 7:45-8:43 2nd hour 8:48-9:46 3rd hour 9:51-10:49 Lunch (30 min) 10:49-11:19 4th hour 11:24-12:23 5th hour 12:28-1:25 6th hour 1:30-2:27 5 minutes passing time between classes

Let’s Talk About Classes Four class periods of full-year academics + One full-year music course Two half-year electives

Every 6th grade student will have: REQUIRED Classes Every 6th grade student will have: A Language Arts class all year, a Math class all year, a Science class all year, and a World Studies class all year Plus required electives……

Advanced Language arts and Accelerated Math All 5th graders will be tested for advanced/accelerated placement Things to consider: Readiness for an accelerated pacing Student work habits/motivation Past performance in the subject area A desire to challenge themselves The tendency to go above and beyond on assignments A love for reading and writing An innate or intuitive sense for math The ability to learn new mathematical concepts easily and quickly

Music Each 6th grader is required to take a year-long music class. Your choices are Band, Choir or Orchestra.

BAND Learn how to play an instrument The Basics: Learn how to play an instrument Types of instruments to choose from: Woodwind Brass Percussion Instrument Fittings will take place at elementary schools in the spring

CHOIR The Basics: Singing and rhythm Pitch & projection Tone quality Performance

Orchestra The Basics: Learn how to play an instrument Types of instruments to choose from: Strings

Elective Classes Students may choose TWO elective classes to complete their schedule. Each elective class is 20 weeks long (half-year each). The choices include: Art Global Digital Leadership Introduction to World Language & Culture Physical Education S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)

ART 6 The Basics: Learn about color, elements of art and design Draw, paint, work with clay, glazing, print-making, etc

Global Digital Leadership The Basics: Technology class with leadership activities, team building, goal setting 3-D printing, Google Cardboard (virtual reality), iPads, iMovie, coding, Makey Makey video game controllers, website creation, stop-motion videos, etc. Community partnerships with local businesses

Introduction to World Language and Culture The Basics: Students are exposed to a variety of world languages, including Chinese, French, German, and Spanish Students learn about different cultures from around the world

Physical Education The Basics: Learn about fitness and setting fitness goals Learn about rules and scoring for both team and individual sports Participate in indoor and outdoor sports activities

S.T.E.M. The Basics: Working with concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Interactive critical thinking projects include robotics, coding, designing and building structures, problem solving in physics topics, etc.

Provide the needed supplies A list of suggested school supplies will be available in the Key Information section of the Van Hoosen Web Page. The Rochester Community Schools provides all necessary materials and supplies for curricular classes. Parents who wish to supplement these materials and supplies for their student in their classes may consider purchasing items from our school supply list which is posted on the website.
