Psychology Placement Student Orientation

Overview of Monash Health Over 16,000 staff Over 40 sites including: - Monash Medical Centre Clayton and Moorabbin - Monash Children’s Hospital - Dandenong Hospital - Casey Hospital - Kingston Centre - Cranbourne Integrated Community Care Centre - Pakenham Hub - Extensive community rehabilitation, community health and mental health services throughout the Southern Region and Statewide services

What we do… In 2017 We provided more than 3.6 million episodes of care to our community More than 260,000 people were admitted to our hospitals More than 220,000 people come to our three Emergency Departments for treatment We respond to more than 54,000 ambulance arrivals We performed more than 48,000 surgical procedures We delivered more than 10,000 babies Together, we seek to deliver quality patient-centred health care and services that meet the needs of our diverse community. The Mental Health Program supports more than one million people across Monash Health’s catchment area. We offer specialist services to south eastern metropolitan and Gippsland regions for eating disorders and perinatal mental health services, and have a Statewide Neurodevelopmental Unit and an adult Gender Clinic

Monash Health - Psychology and Specialist Services Psychology and Specialist Services (PsySS) is responsible for the professional governance of over 160 psychologists Psychologists work across the lifespan in a range of programs including mental health, acute and sub-acute settings, Monash Children’s Hospital and Monash Community We employ psychology registrars and have psychologists across a range of employment grades with various endorsement titles. Clinical and Clinical Neuropsychologists are the largest endorsement areas PsySS also has a number of operational responsibilities within Monash Health including the aPM (agile Psychological Medicine) Clinics, the agile Comprehensive Care initiative, the Forensic Mental Health Assessment and Consultation Unit, Rehabilitation and Aged Care Services (RACS), the Wellness and Recovery Centre, and Acute Neuropsychology

Policies and Procedures Confidentiality Agreement, Student Psychology Placement Contact Form (to sign & return) Psychology Student Placement Declaration (to sign and return) Prompt Policies on student placements including reporting of incidents, complaints and escalation processes Student Orientation Website Smoke Free Environment Clinical Documentation including Hospital Information Service minimum documentation standards and program specific requirements. All Medical Record entries including progress notes, correspondence, Psychology Specific reports require co-signing by the Primary Supervisor, or other psychologists as agreed.

Psychology Student Coordinators All Student Placements are coordinated by the Psychology Clinical Educator – Placement coordinator Dr Sika Turner (sika.turner@monashhealth.org) and overseen by Mr. George Habib (Deputy Director of Psychology – Professional Partnerships). Responsibilities include: University Partnership Agreements. Interviewing and student placement selection PlaceRight documentation Liaison with Monash Health supervisors and program managers Liaison with University and Institution Placement Coordinators

Things you can do to prepare Familiarise yourself with the DSM-V, particularly in the areas you will be placed in i.e. psychosis dx if in an mental health inpatient unit Speak to your placement supervisor about any pre-reading or articles/documents to read prior to placement, particularly regarding relevant psychological interventions and case formulation Have an understanding of maintaining adequate records using DAP/SOAP or other adequate records formats
