Do Now What do you think of when you think of polar bears? You probably imagine them in a snow-covered setting. Why don’t polar bears live in the desert?
Biomes A major biological community that occurs over a large area of land is called a biome. Seven major biomes cover most of the Earth’s land surface.

What are biomes? Biomes are regions of the world with similar climate, animals, and plants.

Biomes. A biome is one of Earth’s large ecosystems, with its own kind of climate, soil, plants, and animals.
TYPES OF FOREST ECOSYSTEM. DECIDOUS FOREST Decidous forest: are dominated by Decidous trees. These trees shed their leaves each year and re grow them.

BIOMES What are they? Where are they? How do they differ? What role does climate play?
B. Biome - plant and animal community. 1. Forest - tree covered a. deciduous (broadleaf) - trees that lose their leaves each season.
17.2 Land Biomes. Why do you think there are so many different kinds of organisms in a tropical rain forest?
LAND BIOMES. Tundra inches of precipitation per year Winter -15 Summer 54F Soil is permafrost; frozen or partly frozen year round; fragile environment.
IX. Biomes Biomes = a large group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms. Two factors that will determine which biome will be dominant on.
What is a biome?  A biome is a large geographical region characterized by distinctive types of plants and animals and a specific climate  Sometimes.
Terrestrial vs. Aquatic
Ecosystems & Organisms. Organisms live and survive by interacting with the living and non-living elements of their ecosystem. Ecosystems have different.
The biosphere is divided into major areas called biomes.
Essential Questions  What are the six major biomes found on Earth?  What factors determine the type of biome found in an area?
World Biomes A variety of ecosystems that are grouped according to similar climates.
Biomes Group of ecosystems that have the same climate and dominant communities.
Forest Habitats. Temperature  Depends on where the forest is located  Can be cold to warm.

Terrestrial Ecosystems

Forests Many trees Temperatures vary Plenty of rainfall

Deciduous Forest Has 4 seasons Trees that lose their leaves Plants – trees, ferns, mosses, shrubs, grasses Animals – bears, foxes, rabbits, deer, snakes, cardinals, owls

Coniferous Forest Colder temperatures Trees that produce seeds in cones and have leaves shaped like needles. Do not lose leaves in fall Animals – elk, moose, beavers, wolves, finches, and jays

Tropical Rainforests Very warm, very rainy, humid Rich in plant and animal life Animals – monkeys, panthers, snakes and other reptiles, spiders, parrots, and toucans.

Temperate Rainforests Cooler temperatures, very rainy, humid Largest along the Pacific Coast of the U.S.

Grasslands Fertile soil covered by tall grasses and some woody shrubs, hardly any trees Warm Some rainfall Gently rolling hills Animals – prairie dogs, grasshoppers, birds, bison

Grasslands In North America the grasslands are called Prairies

Foldable #1 Deciduous Forest Coniferous Forest Tropical Rainforest List information about all 3 different kinds of forests, making sure to compare them.  Example: Types of Trees/Plants found in each, amount of rainfall, animals. Deciduous Forest Coniferous Forest Tropical Rainforest Use your notes and your Social Studies textbook (pgs 64-73) to fill out the chart.

Grasslands and Forests Foldable #2 List similarities and differences between grasslands (prairie NOT savannah) and forests. Grasslands and Forests Similarities Differences Use your notes and your Social Studies textbook (pgs 64-73) to fill out the chart

Terrestrial Ecosystems Exit Ticket Terrestrial Ecosystems   1) What is the difference between a deciduous forest and a coniferous forest? 2) Which type of forest has the most kinds of plants and animals? Why is this? 3) What types of animals are found in a grassland ecosystem? What types of plants?
