Dianna Poe Planning For Technology Spring 2012 Yes Wii Can! Dianna Poe Planning For Technology Spring 2012

Forest Park Middle School is located in Euclid, Ohio and is part of the Euclid City School District

Current Educational Environment Ms. Poe teaches 6 Physical Education classes a day Each period is approximately 40 minutes long. There are about 30 students in each class. Ms. Poe generally has 180 students each school day. Students are on a 9-week rotation. They have physical education every day for 9 weeks and then do not have any PE the remaining 27 weeks. On Friday Ms. Poe gives up her lunch period to teach a self-contained multi-handicapped class.

Current Educational Environment Forest Park Middle School has over 650 students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades Ms. Poe’s physical education classroom currently incorporates technology by using video cameras to analyze physical activities and performances Current assessment involves simple measures of participation. More authentic forms of assessment are needed and will be required by the ODE in the 2012-2013 school year.

Current Educational Environment A large percentage of the students are Forest Park are overweight or obese Over 75% of the students receive free or reduced lunch.

Project Yes Wii Can! This project is a means to help curb the pressing issue of childhood obesity as well as engage all students in participation This project has the potential to get students enthusiastic about their own health and well-being Students will be introduced to a fun, alternative way of exercising, maintaining health and weight, and motivating students to be active This project has the potential to get EVERYONE involved, including our students with special needs

Need for Yes Wii Can! The major area of need is a lack of physical fitness and interest in lifelong wellness at Forest Park Middle School Project Yes Wii Can! will enable us to address areas in which we are weak or lacking and shorten the gap in aligning our PE program to the National and State Standards.

Weaknesses

Program Emphasis Limited scheduling time and equipment has produced a program using a traditional team sport focus Students are not gaining many skills that they can take outside of the physical education setting The “New PE” focuses on lifelong health and wellness

Equipment Our equipment is dated and limited and used mainly for team sports The lack of equipment has caused students to have a lack of interest recently New equipment will provide additional opportunities to excite and motivate more students

Lack of Technology A limited amount of technology is currently used in our PE classes Applying technology will enable us to integrate technology to help students set goal and work toward individual fitness levels promoting healthy lifestyles

Professional Development Euclid City SD prides itself in encouraging teachers to further their expertise in their teaching field but few staff members have knowledge in physical education The current physical education teacher has not been trained sufficiently in the New PE Concepts Additional training will promote responsibility and enhance cooperative skills

Assessment To date there has been no health or fitness data collected on our students With the help of the Wii Fit program the physical education teacher and school administrators will be able to have updated resources to record, analyze, track and guide students on their way to becoming lifelong healthy individuals.

Significance Project Yes Wii Can! will shift the focus of our PE program to the “New PE” focus Traditional phys-ed classes provide too little activity to too few students, offer little or no guidance for maintaining a healthful lifestyle, and can make less athletic children feel inadequate, which can further turn them off to exercise. Enter a new generation of PE, with programs that stress lifelong fitness activities, educate students about healthful diets and teach students how to monitor their heart rates and pulses.

Objectives Students will improve their current level of physical fitness Students will obtain knowledge of the health implications of physical activity, physical fitness and nutrition. Students will become familiar with a variety of exercise programs to promote lifetime physical activity.

How will we achieve this?

Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit Novel approach to physical activity instruction Technology is already in most students’ lives Easy to learn and use Closely parallels activities needed to achieve fitness and health goals

What is a Nintendo Wii?

Here Wii Go! The Nintendo Wii is an electronic gaming console that uses wireless controllers that respond to players' physical motions. For example, in a game of tennis, the user must actually mimic tennis actions to play his or her on-screen opponent. In a game of bowling, the user moves the controller as he would roll a bowling ball.

Embracing Healthy Competition Game-involved, self-imposed goal setting Intrinsic competition Extrinsic competition Improving scores on fitness tests

Components of Fitness It is important to structure learning around: Body Composition Cardio Respiratory Fitness Muscular Endurance Muscular Strength

Inception of the Class Aims of the class Teach basic fitness principles for lifelong health Appeal to a technology-focused group of students Format Teaching with lecture (handouts, practical demos) In-class competitions, goal setting

Timeline The project will begin the first day of the 2012-2013 school year, September 4, 2012 and will end the final day of school, June 14, 2013 The project will involve over 650 students, one physical education teacher, one multi-handicapped teacher and various other teachers in the building

Qualifications I have taught physical education for 18 years I will earn my Masters Degree in Instructional Technology in August of 2012 I have taught adapted physical education to our multi-handicapped class for 12 years with limited resources

Effectiveness The Yes Wii Can! Program will: Improve, enhance and enrich student learning Allow students to compete against themselves or the computer instead of against each other Allow students that are not athletically inclined to participate without fear of embarrassment

Students with Special Needs Students with multiple disabilities benefit from repeated activities that associate hand/eye coordination. These students are often reluctant to participate in physical activities due to fear or worry of getting injured while some are not physically capable of participating. The Wii enables this population to experience the thrill of competition without the anxiety while giving them experiences with many different sports that they wouldn’t otherwise be physically or emotionally able to participate in.

Mission Oak High School Physical education teacher Dina Da Silva raised money from a local business, family and friends to purchase a Wii. "We were approached at the beginning of the year about allowing students with special needs to enter our PE department," Da Silva said. "I thought, what can we do to help these kids get exercise?” Da Silva had the idea for the Wii and Wii Fit. Some kids who cannot participate in regular PE can use the Wii Fit, she said. Student Jayne Mattingly, 15, is one of the users of the Wii. She has spinal bifida and is in a wheelchair. "It's awesome. It's fun," she said. Before the Wii, Mattingly was participating in P.E. but was taken out because she was getting extremely tired, she said. "It's good exercise for me without being painful," she said. Her father, Phillip Mattingly, said he was impressed with the idea of a Wii at the school. "I thought it was incredible," he said. "It's very advanced." Special-needs students play the Wii inside an area of the gym while other students are doing cardio exercises, Da Silva said.

Measurement of Accomplishments

Outcomes Expected outcomes will include student engaging in lifetime sports such as tennis, gold, bowling and dance Students will be able to graph and calculate target heart rates along with body mass index therefore leading to more student participation Students will be measured by their gaming results and statistics The Wii system provides fitness test results as feedback from workouts while playing The overall measurement will be student participation and motivation as well as grades increasing to to engagement

Results Results will be shared with parents in each students report card Results will be shared with administration Results will be shared with other physical educators and those interested in educational technology by sharing the information at both the eTech conference and at the OAHPERD conference
