U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Organization logo Student Career Experience Program Jessie Pearl Geology, Environmental Studies (Science Track) LA 2013, jessie.pearl@tufts.edu Overview The Emergency Planning and Response Branch is responsible for responding to threats to public health and/or the environment pursuant with responsibility for emergency and removal response activities under CERCLA, the Oil Pollution Act (OPA) and the Clean Water Act (CWA).   The program office has responsibility for preventing, and/or mitigating the health and environmental hazards resulting from sudden and unexpected or intentional releases or discharges of oil and hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants, including releases of biological, chemical and radiological agents, and uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Application to Current Goals This internship provided me with the experience and the contacts to further my career in the environmental field. The networking opportunities I was given are highly valuable, and the trainings I attended gave me insight into the work of environmental clean up and processes. Because I was in the emergency response field, I was able to observe the various stages of response and planning from the initial incident response, to the closing memos of sites. I was also able to get involve in some of the specific chemistries and ecologies of certain sites that were in the process of being cleaned. Skills Acquired • Assistance at public meetings • Responding to questions, comments, and written inquiries from the public • Technical review of documents • Technical subject matter library internet research • Dissemination of information to the public • Policy research or evaluation • Compilation, interpretation, and graphic presentation of data • Development of fact sheets and newsletters • Filing/records management • Maintenance of project-specific web pages • Technical file review including summary preparation • Fieldwork assistance and field testing and measurements • Assistance with public outreach efforts Image Image I would like to acknowledge Dani Jenkins for all of her help with this poster and Professor Orians for his guidance and support.
