How many data tools do you think supported by Northeastern for faculty, staff, and students? https://www.polleverywhere.com/free_text_polls/XwiP0KughRsaR8O Answer: over
background Answer: over 20 tools and growing! We are fortunate to have truly fantastic tools and resources available for all stages of the data cycle, but it can be very overwhelming! Everything is very unconnected and it’s hard to see how tools work in the data cycle and where support can be found in relation to the tool and step of the data cycle you are in.
the goal Data is starting to infiltrate every college and major. Students, faculty, and staff all some kind of interaction with data some on a regular basis, others periodically for projects. We have so many amazing tools and support available for data at Northeastern but it’s hard to know where to start if you are knew to data or even Northeastern. ITS-ATS saw a need and opportunity to collaborate with others around the University to develop a guide to assist the Northeastern community in navigating through the resources and selecting the correct tools, use cases, resources, and training. The Data Resource Portal was designed to try develop an ecosystem around data at Northeastern. We hope it’s a resource for a student, a staff, or a faculty member maybe just getting started working on a data project as well as a frequently visited tool for those who are very comfortable with data but want to continue to learn more and share with others.

With the CAMD data skills and data visualizations background, it was clear this project was a perfect fit for the S.I.T.E members of the team. [Antonio, not sure how much you want to go into detail about the group, but I think you should totally share the skills you, Tree, and Zhenyan bring to the table] S.I.T.E is Students Influencing Technology in Education and provides graduate interns project such as this one, to innovate and grow their skills. ATS team members, work with S.I.T.Es to help guide projects and collaborate on projects together.
the process scope wireframe mood board research Fall ‘16 When starting, we first researched all the different tools available at Northeastern to start building out our catalog. At the same time, we started Wireframing how the portal would flow and created a mood board for the look and feel.
the process research outreach survey focus group Dec. ‘16 A big part of the Data Resource Portal is highlighting the support and services available around the data tools at Northeastern. To better understand this support and to ensure we were headed in the right direction we started our outreach to data experts around campus. We sent surveys and had a focus group in December. The information gathered in both helped us to expand our tool catalog as well as provided information that supported what we thought: students/faculty/staff aren’t always sure where to started and like to have resource available online. The image is the survey feedback from the question: What are the biggest challenges you commonly face when working with data analytics software?
