What evidence do we have of prehistoric people?

Lesson Objectives To recap the problems with Archaeological evidence To compare Prehistoric people to Aborigines To evaluate the similarities and differences between prehistoric and aboriginal use of the dual approach

The Aborigines

The Aborigines had little or no contact with European settlers in Australia until the 20th century. They are the best example of a prehistoric group of people that are living today.

Making a case study: when you make a case study, you must think about how you set it out, use pictures and diagrams and ensure that its detailed and easy to revise from.

Who were the aborigines? Nomads Lived on Australian desert Hunters Gathered wild plants Many spoken languages - no written language Communicated through dances, paintings on body

Who were the aborigines? The Spirit World It started in dreamtime when the spirit ancestors lived. What they couldn’t explain in the world around them was because of the spirits. Some things had obvious causes. E.g. broken arm encased in clay, cuts covered in clay or animal fat, bound with bark. If it didn’t have an obvious cause, it must be because of the spirits.

Who were the aborigines? The spirits - evil spirit could have entered the body to make you ill or your own spirit might have been taken away by your enemy in a fight. This was with the pointing bone. You needed to get the bone back to get your spirit back. Aborigines wore amulets. These were often worn over a painful part of the body as they believed it would help to heal them.
