Warm-Up 1/23/17 and 1/24/17 Write down as many natural disasters you can think of. Make a list ordering these by how frequent they occur from most frequent to least frequent. Make a list showing how much of an impact they have on the surface of the crust, from most impact to least impact.

Overview Where we have been: Where we are going: Understanding that various geosciences processes usually behave gradually but can be punctuated by catastrophic events Continental drift Plate tectonics Rock cycle Water cycle Where we are going: Categories of geosciences processes How we can mitigate the effects of geosciences processes we consider to be natural disasters.

Objective: I will be able to describe different types of geosciences processes and ways to mitigate their impact as evidenced by creating a news report video. Geoscience Processes 1/23/17 and 1/24/17 Pg. 61

Geosciences processes: Geosciences: fields of science dealing with planet earth Processes: a continuous action, operation, or series of changes/events taking place in a definite manner Geosciences processes: the series of events taking place on and affecting Earth This includes: Natural disasters Tectonic plates Convection currents

Categorizing Processes by Time

Large Scale Geosciences processes that operate on a very long time scale. Very slow processes. Example: Plate Boundaries Divergent boundaries creating rift valleys & sea-floor spreading Convergent boundaries creating mountain ranges & volcanoes Transform boundaries creating strike-slip faults

Small Scale Geosciences processes that operate on a very short time scale. Very fast processes. Example: Rapid landslides Rockslides Floods *2013 Ensenada landslide

Categorizing Processes by Location

External Processes Processes that affect the surface of the Earth Examples: Hurricanes Tornadoes Floods Weathering and erosion

Internal Processes Events that affect or occur in the Earth’s interior Examples: Earthquakes Formation of Earth’s magnetic field Mantle Convection

Not a Perfect Classification Since volcanoes involve magma that rises through the crust and is pushed out onto the surface of the Earth it can be regarded as either external, internal, or both

Natural Disaster News Report Four parts of the video will included: Anchor Field Reporter Interviewee Expert You are a news reporter that has been sent out to report on one of 16 recent natural disasters (see list to choose which one you want to report on). You will research the natural disaster and create a video to inform the public Video can be made on Explain Everything or iMovie You must be able to submit the video to Google classroom (save to camera roll, and submit)

Natural Disaster News Report Video must include 4 parts: 1. Anchor: Description of the event What happened, where it happened, when, and category of disaster. Possible cause or result. 2. Expert: How people can protect themselves During this type of disaster and in the future. 3. Field Reporter: How frequent an event like this happens How common is this type of event/when did the last similar event occur? 4. Interviewee: Impact of specific disaster/what was seen What it does to the Earth’s surface, deaths, injuries and structure damage

Natural Disaster News Report Research your natural disaster on your own and take notes on the “Natural Disaster Report” handout ( located on the back of your advanced organizer). Using these notes, plan out and create your news report on your iPad (explain everything or iMovie) You should add text, pictures, characters, etc.

Example: Natural disaster: Peshtigo Fire Anchor: Description On October 8, 1871 in and around Peshtigo, Wisconsin a firestorm burnt through 1.5 million acres killing as many as 2,500. Firestorm: a destructive fire that is so intense it creates and sustains its own wind system. Interviewee: Impact deforestation, increased release of carbon dioxide into the air, and drying up of water resources but also help bring nutrients back into the soil. While not the largest fire this was the deadliest and considered one of the worst recorded forest fires in North America. Expert: How to protect themselves Protect yourself! Remove all natural fuels such as dry grass from within 100 feet from your home, do not rely on dust masks for protection as these do not protect against smoke, and evacuate immediately if prompted by local authorities. Field Reporter: Frequency There has not been a fire as deadly since the Peshtigo Fire but the same day there was the well known Chicago fire. The Chicago fire was remembered because of its location within the city even though the Peshtigo Fire was much worse. This is considered a once in a lifetime fire and lets hope we do not see another one anytime soon.
