Findlay Creek Safety Meeting March 21st, 2018

The police can't do it alone OPS work in partnership with the community to ensure that people's rights, lives and property are safe and secure.

Recent major Incidents in the Findlay Creek area: Call #: 18-15700 January 19th, 2018 Robbery / Firearm discharge – Currently under investigation by the OPS Guns and Gangs section.

Street and Gang Violence: The OPS considers any level of gun or street violence unacceptable. The Ottawa Police Service is one of 21 partner agencies that have developed and are actively working on the Ottawa Street Violence and Gang Strategy. Four Pillars: Neighbourhood Cohesion, Prevention, Intervention, Enforcement and Suppression. The vast majority of street violence and gang activity relates back to illicit profit. Most shootings are targeted, meaning the suspect(s) and victim(s) know each other on some level. There are identified gangs and persons of interest to the Guns and Gangs section who reside in almost all communities in Ottawa.

Ottawa Street Violence and Gang Strategy Pillars

Enforcement pillar: (Project Sabotage ) A seven month Guns and Gangs Unit-led investigation into gun and drug trafficking in the city of Ottawa 16 people were charged with multiple offences 14 search warrants at addresses across the region Officers seized 24 firearms including semi-automatic weapons, long guns, handguns (both revolvers and semi auto pistols) and ammunition Narcotics (cocaine and Fentanyl patches) were also seized along with a drug press and cash

General Safety Tips Be alert to your surroundings and avoid isolated areas, in particular after dark. Travel with multiple friends whenever possible; Be wary of inadvertently displaying possessions such as cell phones and personal music devices; and, Let someone know where you are going and when you can be expected home

Crime Prevention Know what to do if you become a victim: Do not resist your attackers, they may be armed and this could lead to injury; Try and memorize their faces, clothing and license plates if they leave in vehicles;

Phone Frauds: Canada Revenue Agency Scam -Fraudulent Phone Calls indicating that you owe back tax money. -Requesting you have amounts owing or back taxes with a Credit Card or Gift Card. -Will threaten arrest of you and your family **CRA does not request payment via credit card or gift cards over the phone.

Computer/Internet Fraud CRA Refund Scam -Email from CRA indicating that you have a tax refund, (mail.electrnic@payments.interac.ca). -Link leads you to a page that indicates you have a $458.00 refund from CRA (amount may vary). Click on a 2nd link.“Deposit to your financial institution” -3rd page appears requesting your S.I.N. #, First and Last Name, D.L. #, address, D.O.B., and credit card information. *CRA does not send these emails to people or provide refunds via credit cards, itune cards, gift cards.

Crime Stoppers It’s not a replacement for calling the police directly, but it’s a safe mechanism to report crime in anonymity. 1.800.222.8477(TIPS) www.crimestoppers.ca www.facebook.com/crimestoppersCA www.youtube.com/crimestoppersCA www.twitter.com/crimestoppersOT Text: “tip252 followed by your confidential information” and send it to CRIMES (274637

Why Crime Stoppers Works ANONYMOUS Crime Stoppers operates on the premise that for every crime that occurs someone other than the criminal knows about it. The main factors that prevents people from calling the police about a crime are “apathy and fear of reprisal”.

Crime Stoppers Cont’d Crime Stoppers addresses both issues by offering a cash reward and providing the guarantee of anonymity Cash Reward for tips leading to arrest/charges
