RoadMap to Internship

PSYC 499 - Internship Required by all students pursuing their B.S. in Psychology or Human Services Provides opportunities for experience, awareness of professional responsibilities and skills, and develops synthesis of human behavior patterns Focuses primarily on the observation of human behavior of a specific population For PSYC 499 - a minimum of 3 credit hours is required, totaling 125 internship working hours Credit Hours Internship Work Hours 3 125 4 168 5 210 6 250

HSER 499 - Internship Requires 6 credit hours, totaling 250 internship working hours Must be able to observe a population that meets the criteria for a particular DSM-5 diagnosis (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Substance Use Disorders, PTSD, etc.) Same application process as for PSYC 499 Credit Hours Internship Work Hours 6 250 7 293 8 335 9 375

Requirements to apply for PSYC 499… Must have at least 2.0 overall GPA Junior or Senior status 18 credits of PSYC or PSYC-related coursework successfully completed (includes CCOU, MILT, LIFC, CRIS, SOCI, and COUN courses) Suitable internship site

How to apply for PSYC 499/HSER 499: Secure a site Secure a site supervisor and obtain a supervisor approval letter Gather the following information necessary for completing the application Site Name Site full address Site Supervisor’s full name Valid supervisor email address Supervisor approval letter Detailed description of duties being performed at site APPLY!

Questions to keep in mind when finding a site… Do I have ample opportunities to observe behavior? Can I easily monitor/track behavior? Is this position more administrative in nature than it is observational? (Administrative duties will NOT be approved) What does this site need from me in order to intern there? Will this site be able to provide me with a minimum of 125 internship hours? Who will my site supervisor be?

Questions to keep in mind when You have a site… How long will it take to be approved as an intern at my site? Does my site require a background check? Does my site require health records from me? Are there deadlines for a separate application for my site? Does my site require an affiliation agreement/contract to be set up between Liberty and the site? Are additional insurances needed? Does the site require a confidentiality agreement to be signed?

Examples of Approved & Not Approved Sites Childcare, Adult care, or Assisted Living centers Church settings (youth groups, children’s church, celebrate recovery, etc.) Hospital psychiatric units Counseling Agencies School guidance offices outside of Lynchburg, VA Social Services Not Approved Informal babysitting/nannying positions Secretary/administrative work Retail sales associate Prior experiences Crisis Text Lines Suicide Prevention Hotlines
