Conflict Notes

What is conflict? It is the struggle between opposing forces in a story. There are 2 kinds: External vs. Internal

What is External Conflict? The character struggles with an outside force. Character cannot control the outside force.

Character vs. Character The main character is in conflict with another character, human or not human. Example: superheros vs villans

Character vs. Nature Character is in conflict with the forces of nature.

Example: most war stories Character vs. Society The main character is in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc. Example: most war stories

What is Internal Conflict? It is a struggle that takes place in a character’s mind. For example, a character may have to decide between right and wrong.

The main character experiences some sort of inner conflict. Character vs. Self The main character experiences some sort of inner conflict.
