Characterization Characterization refers to the way a writer develops his characters. A writer may use any or all of the following methods of characterization: Description of character’s appearance. A character’s speech, thoughts, feelings, or actions. What other characters think and say about a character. The narrator’s direct comments about a character.

Characterization Direct characterization is when an author explicitly states a character’s personality. Indirect characterization is when an author hints at a character’s personality through description of the character’s appearance, speech, and actions.
