In-Class Writing Reflection Patrick Henry Rhetorical Analysis

Writing Reflection STEP 1- Claim Put a star over your claim. Does it identify 1-3 persuasive appeals or devices Patrick Henry uses in his speech? Does your claim follow a pattern similar to this one? In Patrick Henry’s Speech to the Virginia Convention, he uses __________, _________, and _______________ to make his argument more effective. If you are missing either of the above criteria make a note to self on your paper.

Writing Reflection STEP 2- Evidence Underline the evidence used in your paragraph Does each piece of evidence MATCH with a part of your claim? For example, if you said Henry uses pathos in your claim, do you have a direct example to prove that? If you are missing any pieces of evidence that are needed to match up to your claim, make a note about it on your paper. Ex: I mentioned logos in my claim, but I don’t have any evidence of that in my paragraph. I need to add it in.

Writing Reflection STEP 3- Reasoning Highlight the reasoning used in your paragraph (if you don’t have a highlighter, use a colored pen to underline it) Does each piece of evidence have reasoning directly following it? If not, make note of this. You reasoning should directly explain WHY the example is effective. Make note if not. Poor Reasoning: One example of logos is when Henry states, “We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated.” Here, he is listing off all of the examples of attempts the colonists have made to maintain the peace. Good Reasoning: One example of logos is when Henry states, “We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated.” Listing off the specific examples of the colonists’ failed attempts to keep the peace is effective because he factually proves that peace has not been possible for the past 10 years and is not likely to occur now. This is very convincing, because it shows the audience that they need to try a new approach.

Writing Reflection STEP 4- Conclusion Star your concluding sentence. It should essentially restate your claim. Leave a note to self if it does not do this. STEP 5- Transition words and phrases. Circle transition words and phrases used in your paragraph. If you have very few, make editing notes about what you could add in. For example, V Henry uses logos when he states, “….”
