The Ideal Gas Equation Objectives: Students should be able to: (b) select and apply the ideal gas equation; (c) state the basic assumptions of the kinetic theory of gases;

The Ideal Gas Equation Outcomes: You must ALL Be able to select and apply the ideal gas equation correctly to a number of situations. AND Be able to state the basic assumptions of the kinetic theory of gases.

Key Questions In small groups you will discuss the following questions and you must be prepared to feedback your answer to the class.

1 Can you state Boyle’s Law and describe an experiment that demonstrates it?

2 Last lesson you also carried out 2 other experiments. Could you describe the conclusions from these experiments?

3 What is the kinetic theory and how does it explain gas pressure? For extra points… Can you remember the assumptions made for this theory to hold?

4 From last lesson we found that Volume is directly proportional to Temperature as is Pressure. We also found that the Volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the Pressure exerted on it. Discuss how these observations can be linked. Can you write down a possible equation for this? (This is the Ideal Gas Equation.)

The Ideal Gas Equation Outcomes: You must ALL Be able to select and apply pV = constant T correctly to a number of situations. AND Be able to state the basic assumptions of the kinetic theory of gases.
