Self-evaluation tool for digitally capable schools (SELFIE) Danijela Šćepanović Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, Serbia The structure of my presentation is quite simple and straightforward – I am going to tell you why we have developed SELFIE, what is this about, what we have achieved so far and what is next. DELTA WG | 26 Sep 2018 #SELFIE_EU | #EUDigitalEducation

Why SELFIE?

... after centuries of human evolution DIGITAL AGE

Use of technology Digital competence

What is SELFIE?

Willingness Sustainable change Monitoring Vision & Plan (know thyself) SELFIE: Is YOUR school ready to make the most of digital technologies for learning? Willingness (know thyself) Sustainable change Monitoring Vision & Plan

From theory to practice (DigCompOrg model) The statements cover areas such as leadership, infrastructure, teacher training and students’ digital competence.

It´s NOT about technology SELFIE is about learning for the digital age It´s NOT about technology

360o approach SELFIE involves the whole school community – school leaders, teachers and students – in a 360-degree process covering many areas of school practice. SELFIE allows all participants to answer questions that match their experience, as students, teachers or school leaders.

What has been done?

Successful pilot in 14 countries in late 2017 Source: https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/digcomporg/selfie-tool/selfie-map

Theoretical foundation Validation & scoping workshop Overview of the pilot phase Theoretical foundation DigCompOrg conceptual model with 7 areas, 74 descriptors Meta-analysis of 15 existing tools Consultation with ET2020 Working Group on Digital Skills & Competences User consultation >5000 school leaders, teachers and students Expert consultation SELFIE community workshop Participatory design Mixed method research SELFIE beta in 12 languages SELFIE beta testing in 14 countries, 650 schools, >67000 users Pilot data analysis including thematic analysis, descriptive statistics, item analysis & confirmatory factor analysis >20 case studies including focus groups & interviews 14 country reports including lessons learnt & recommendations Validation & scoping workshop

Far more than originally planned! 650 schools 67,714 users 5% 17% 78% 73 Upper Secondary Vocational - 11% 237 Primary – 37% 189 Lower Secondary - 29% 151 Upper Secondary - 23% 650 instead of 60 schools, 67000 users instead of 5000! Although we run it in September! All data gathered through SELFIE is anonymous and cannot be tracked to individual schools, students or teachers. 2,979 11,773 52,962 Far more than originally planned!

Key findings from SELFIE pilots SELFIE is a valid and reliable tool It captures well the digital capacity of schools It is user-friendly and works well in all devices It allows for a time-effective self-reflection process It is a good basis for reflection and planning at school level It can be also useful for policy making purposes

Policy

EU policy priority Adopted by Commission 18 January 2018 Support digital readiness of schools… by making the SELFIE self-assessment tool reach one million teachers, trainers and learners by end of 2019 Adopted by Commission 18 January 2018 SELFIE is one of the 11 actions proposed

Part of a wider research and policy agenda! DigComp (citizens, learners) DigCompEdu (educators)

SELFIE Multilingual portal https://ec.europa.eu/education/schools-go-digital

Launch on 25 October Support digital readiness of schools… by making the SELFIE self-assessment tool reach one million teachers, trainers and learners by end of 2019 Aim to reach one million users by the end of 2019!

SELFIE in a nutshell

360o SELFIE: a open & customisable self-reflection tool It is NOT a(nother) survey! Research-based Easy-to-use Customisable Useful for reflection, planning… …and change! 360o To help schools realise where they stand in their use of digital technologies, we (EC with an international team of experts and end users) developed SELFIE: a free, online, customisable and easy-to-use self-reflection tool. As I said, the tool assesses learning, not technology, and hence follows a 360 degrees approach including school strategies, teaching practices, infrastructure, curricula and students' experiences. It is NOT a panacea!

360o approach SELFIE involves the whole school community – school leaders, teachers and students – in a 360-degree process covering many areas of school practice. SELFIE allows all participants to answer questions that match their experience, as students, teachers or school leaders.

Any device & operating system ●       SELFIE is free of charge.

Free ●       SELFIE is free of charge.

Secure ●       SELFIE is free of charge.

Anytime Anywhere Anonymous SELFIE gathers the views of students, teachers and school leaders on how technology is used in their school. This is done using short statements and questions and a simple 1-5 agreement scale. All answers provided through SELFIE are anonymous. Individual students, teachers, school leaders or other staff members replying to the questions and statements cannot be identified personally.

Time effective

SELFIE is for schools, for all schools!

Fully customisable Because every school is unique, the tool can be customised. Your school can select and add questions and statements to suit your needs.

A different SELFIE for each school Indicators added by the school Sector specific e.g. VET Indicators selected by the school CORE indicators common to all schools School profile

Only school has access to its SELFIE It is NOT (another) survey! It´s a tool "for" schools, which "own" their data On completing SELFIE, each school receives a tailor-made, interactive report which provides both in-depth data and quick insights into strengths and weaknesses. The results and insights from the SELFIE exercise are for your school only and are not shared unless you choose to do so. No other organisation, including the European Commission, can track the answers for an individual school.

SELFIE School Report It highlights what’s working well, where improvement is needed and what the priorities should be Based on this input, the tool generates a report – a snapshot (‘SELFIE’ :-)) of a school‘s strengths and weaknesses in their use of digital technologies for teaching and learning. The more people in the school taking part, the more accurate the SELFIE of their school will be. On completing SELFIE, each school receives a tailor-made, interactive report which provides both in-depth data and quick insights into strengths and weaknesses.

Basis for dialogue and planning SELFIE school report can be used for a dialogue within the school, to develop an action plan… The findings can help you see where you are at and, from there, start a conversation on technology use and develop an action plan for your school. SELFIE can then be used at a later stage to gauge progress and adapt the action plan.

… to monitor progress over time
