CHEMICAL REACTIONS 4 types
SYNTHESIS two or more substances react to form a single substance.
General: A + B AB Example C + O2 CO2 + O O O O O O O O O O O O O
Decomposition a compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances.
Example: NaCl Na + Cl Cl Na Cl + Na General: AB A + B
Example 2HgO 2Hg + O2 O Hg Hg O + General: AB A + B
Single Replacement one element takes the place of another element in a compound.
Example: Zn + CuCl2 ZnCl2 + Cu Zn Cl Cu + Cl Zn Cu + General: AB + C AC + B
Double Replacement two different compounds exchange positions and form two new compounds.
Example: MgO + CaS MgS + CaO Mg Ca + O S Mg Ca + General: AB + CD AD + CB
You are to draw examples of each type of reaction. Let’s come up with a rubric to go on the back of the drawing.
