2016 CDC Report Cites Danger of Inactivity among Aging Population More than 1 in 4 Americans aged 50+ are inactive Inactivity is highest in the South and among adults with at least one chronic disease Inactivity significantly increases with age—more than 1 in 3 persons aged 75+ Inactivity is especially high among the less educated "Adults benefit from any amount of physical activity. Helping inactive people become more physically active is an important step towards healthier and more vibrant communities.“ —Dr. Janet Fulton, CDC report author In a recent media release (September 15, 2016), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that "Despite the many benefits of moderate physical activity, 31 million Americans (28 percent) age 50 years and older are inactive -- that is, they are not physically active beyond the basic movements needed for daily life activities." An author of the CDC report, Dr. Janet Fulton, put it this way: "Adults benefit from any amount of physical activity. Helping inactive people become more physically active is an important step towards healthier and more vibrant communities." In analyzing nationwide data from the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, CDC found that inactivity was highest in the South (30.1 percent) and among adults with at least one chronic disease. They also found that inactivity significantly increased with age--with more than a third (35.3%) of those aged 75 and older being inactive. Also, they reported that the "percentage of inactivity decreased as education increased and also increased as weight status increased.  31 million Americans (28%) age 50 years and older are inactive. Inactivity is highest in the South (30%) and among adults with at least one chronic disease. Inactivity significantly increases with age--with more than a third (35%) of those aged 75 and older being inactive. The percentage of inactivity decreases as education increases.

Appendix 1: CHA Complete Findings Presentation/ Databook 2014 Chatham County Community Health Assessment Appendix 1: CHA Complete Findings Presentation/ Databook Obesity was #1 priority Obesity is linked to a number of chronic diseases and reduced overall quality of life Physical activity is key to good health Chatham Community Perspective Big Problem Problem Not a Problem Don’t know In the survey, we asked respondents to go through a list of issues and tell us if each was a big problem, problem, or not a problem in their community, or they did not know. Other than demographics questions, this was the only item asked in the 2010 community survey. The results are on this slide. For example, obesity/overweight had the highest percentage of respondents who said it was either a problem or big problem in their communities. In 2010, jobs, obesity, and lack of adequate/affordable health insurance topped the list. Source: Chatham Community Health Opinion Survey, 2014

Most older adults want to age at home— Why we NEED the Chatham Senior Olympics Training Program In 2016, only 155 of 29,000 Chatham residents aged 50+ participated in Senior Games. Most NC Senior Games participants are college educated—most Chatham seniors are not, especially in western Chatham. In 2016, nearly $8 million was spent by Medicaid to support Chatham residents in nursing homes—only $8,000 was available for elderly Health Promotion programs. Most older adults want to age at home— one of the best ways to remain independent is to stay physically active. We had 65 participants in 2013; 112 in 2014
