Composting. What is composting? Composting is a biological process that occurs when tiny, microscopic organisms break down old plant and animal tissues.
A) What is Composting? Composting happens naturally in the environment. It is when leaves, plants and other natural materials decompose into nutrients.

Presentation transcript:

Plastic Packaging and the Environment.. What are my options? Degradable / Biodegradable films 100% Biodegradable films (according to EN 13432) 100% Biodegradable films as above made from renewable materials. Bioplastics Recyclable Reusable Incinerable

Biodegradable OPP Same performance as OPP films Degradable / Biodegradable to ASTM D An oil based product with an additive to make biodegradable This product cannot claim to be compostable as it does not complete the degradation process inside 6 months

OPP This product offers high clarity, crisp film Care must be taken during the storage of the film as prolonged exposure to UV light begins the degradation process

EN What is it? Characterisation Biodegradability Disintegration Compost Quality Recognisable Product

Biodegradability Under the action of the bacteria present in the soil, breaks down leaving basically nothing but water and carbon gas Standards: after 90 days, 90% of carbon becomes CO2. Any residual waste will pass through a 2mm screen (0,008Inch). No negative effect on the quality of the resulting compost. (Tested with 2 plants)

Disintegration The degradation process begins when the bags are in the condition of final use, not in storage Degradation time depends on the quantity of bacteria in the function of temperature, pH and humidity

Degradation Test Temperature: 30 degrees Time 84 hours Humidity: 60-70% Does the film tear? YES (degradation has begun) Home Composter Temperature: 23 degrees Time: 84 hours Humidity: 60-70% Does the film tear? NO Temperature: 40 degrees Time 84 hours Humidity: 60-70% Does the film tear? YES (degradation has begun)

Compost 610mm below the ground surface is a constant temperature of 68 degrees. The humidity and pH are perfect for degradation. A bioplast material film will compost within 90 days Bioplastic is the only material which can use the OKCompost Logo (from Vincotte) and "Compostable" logo (from Din Certco) Our material is suitable for home compost and can display the OKCOMPOST HOME logo

What are Bioplastics? Bioplastics are biodegradable biopolymers in accordance with Standard EN 13432, made from renewable raw materials, vegetable or animal Our material is compostable in industrial and home composters and can use the OK to Compost Home logo. (Approved by Vincotte)

Renewable Plants reproduce themselves endlessly, as long as they are provided with light, water and mineral nutrients. Bioplastics are made from carbon present in live vegetable matter.

Making my packaging.. 40 – 60% of the content is from renewable sources, blended with a co- polyester from BASF The material can be coloured using a 100% biodegradable masterbatch The material can be printed and still complies with EN as long as the print does not exceed 2% of the finished structure

Summary Bioplastics are the only true 100% biodegradable films which are made from renewable sources Biodegradable OPP offers a high clarity, crisp film
