Baptism is important because it allows: “the serpent …said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’? – Genesis 3 “Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” – Genesis 3:13 God had given people many opportunities to follow this rules and felt that people had lost their way. He wanted to give humans another chance to have that relationship back with him and to do this he sent himself to earth. He allowed himself to be born and live as a human (Jesus) so he could teach people face to face how to behave and give them a role model. By doing this God bridged the gap back between himself and humans. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” – Matthew 3: 16-17 “this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ” – 1 Peter 3:21 “Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”” – Luke 23:34 ““There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living….” – Parable of the Lost/Prodigal Son Matthew 25:31–46: "But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats” Baptism is important because it allows: Christians to become a member of the church Becomes a child of God Receives the holy spirit Imitates Jesus’s life and baptism Cleansed of sin Is a sacrament Sin is the belief that you are going against God’s rules and therefore disobeying his command. Christians now can sin by breaking any rules from the Bible. The main rules are the Ten Commandments. There are 2 types of Evil. Natural and Moral. Natural evil is evil caused by the natural world – e.g.. Tsunamis, earthquakes or typhoons. Moral evil is evil caused by humans e.g. Murder, Assault or Theft. Jesus was baptised in the river Jordan by John the Baptist. He wanted to show people that they were born into sin (as they were humans – Adam and Eve) and could correct this and still gain salvation. Modern Christians still baptise (christen/infant baptism) their children (some get baptised as adults/ believers baptism) to show their commitment and welcome to the church. The process is to use water to symbolically clean the person of their previous sins. This is important because God wanted to build the relationship back with humans and offered through himself as Jesus a chance to regain his trust. As a human he loved everyone, preached forgiveness and contradicted some of the teachings that he had already given (these later became the old testament). God wanted humans to be refreshed and believe again in him – and show this. This is important because the original (first) Sin was the Fall of Adam and Eve. After that humans continued to sin. Evil causes suffering. This is important because some people think that because there is too much evil and suffering in the world that God isn’t real as he is believed to be the greatest (omnipotent/omniscient/benevolent) and could surely stop suffering if he wanted to. Christians would argue either God wants humans to have free will and therefore they can choose to make evil choices (and choose to believe in God) Evil is out of out of God’s control because the devil controls evil The world was created perfectly ‘and God saw it was good’ however when Adam and Eve sinned the creation was broken and evil entered the world. Evil has a purpose – God allows evil so that people can learn from their mistakes/ prove they are good and get rewarded by being allowed to go to heaven. EXODUS: You shall have no other gods before me Honour your father and your mother You shall not murder You shall not commit adultery You shall not steal You shall not give false testimony (Lie) Adam and Eve were in the garden of Eden in the beginning and they disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of Good and Evil. God ‘fell out’ with them and the relationship between God the Father and Man was destroyed. The fall is important because it shows that humans were made by God, given clear rules and still struggled to follow them. This shows that even Christians can make mistakes and part of being a human it to make choices and accept the consequences.
